Jones leads WCDS boys in cross country meet

Jason Jones finished second overall and Wayne Country Day claimed a team victory during a seven-team meet contested on its home course Monday afternoon.
Jones ran the 5k (3.1-mile) trek in 20 minutes, 33 seconds. Teammates Jackson Warren (21:48) and DJ Waters (21:49) crossed the line in seventh and eighth, respectively. The trio combined for a meet-winning 17 points -- seven points lower than runner-up and county rival Wayne Christian.
Wilson Christian placed third with 27 points, followed by Community Christian (29), Greenfield (45), Freedom Christian (54) and Ahoskie Ridgecroft (71). In N.C. Independent School Athletic Association competition, just the top three runners account for the team score.
Wayne Christian's duo of Justin Graham (21:48) and Zach Shirley (21:36) placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Teammate Nicolas Toner claimed ninth in 22:26.
On the girls' side, WCDS standout Margaret Tanner ended up 10th overall in 28:24. Natalie Bailey posted a 13th-place time of 28:50 and Crawford Tanner (31:16) capped the Chargers' team score of 41 points with an 18th-place finish.
Wilson Christian, which took the top five spots, won the meet with six points. Freedom was second with 27 points and Community Christian was fourth with 55 points.
