DUDLEY -- Defending 1-AA state champion James Kenan -- without its leading returning ball carrier Al Owens -- rushed for 252 yards and four touchdowns as team during its 42-0, non-conference triumph over Southern Wayne on Friday night.
Senior Jaquan Williams carried the ball nine times for 127 yards and three touchdowns. Khalil Savage added the other rushing touchdown.
Quarterback Ken Avent III posted a near-perfect quarterback rating of 153.3 in the season opener for both teams. He was 5 for 7 for 112 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 74 yards.
The Tigers owned a 429-178 advantage in all-purpose yards.
Tyaire Allen led the Saints' offense with 93 yards rushing.
"We are better than what the scoreboard showed at the end of the game tonight," said Southern Wayne head coach David Lee, whose team committed five turnovers. "We will get back to work and get ready for Smithfield-Selma."
Southern Wayne travels to SSS next Friday, while James Kenan is the guest of county archrival Wallace-Rose Hill in a rematch of last year's eastern regional final won by the Tigers.
