* Boys' soccer: Freedom Christian 2, Wayne Christian 1 -- Holden Foster scored the lone goal for Wayne Christian. The Eagles (0-1-0 overall) entertain Wilson Christian on Friday.

* Volleyball: Goldsboro d. Southern Wayne 25-11, 25-19 -- Kelsey Kennedy served five aces and Tawanna Jones collected four kills in the Cougars' season-opening win. Juanita Cortes-Torres had four assists.

* Volleyball: North Lenoir d. Eastern Wayne 16-25, 25-13, 25-13 -- Reagan Avery had five kills and Madison Cottle had two kills. Jana Moore tallied 13 assists. Allison Montague had 15 service points.

Middle schools

* Volleyball: Wayne Christian d. Wayne Country Day 25-23, 25-22 -- New coach Lauren Rouse pulled out a win her first game as coach. Stats were not submitted to the News-Argus. Wayne Christian hosts Wilson Christian at 4 p.m. on Friday.
