Whiteville scores late run, defeats Princeton 4-3

PRINCETON -- Whiteville pushed across the game-winning run in the sixth inning and defeated Princeton, 4-3, in game one of their N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A eastern regional softball championship series Wednesday evening.
Game two is Friday at Whiteville. First pitch is 7 p.m. A third game, if necessary, is Saturday at Princeton with a start time of 6 p.m.
The Wolfpack grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third inning. The Bulldogs, who lost their first home game of the season, answered with a three-run, fifth-inning outburst.
Kelsey Peedin led Princeton's offensive attack with two hits. Savanna Massengill, Tori Paul, Taylor Carroll, Charley Cox, Hailey Wood and Carson Braswell each had one hit to round out the offense.
Cox, Carroll and Paul each supplied an RBI.
Princeton committed three errors resulting in two unearned runs for Whiteville. Paul and Wood combined for a five-hitter and 10 strikeouts inside the pitcher's circle. Wood took the loss in relief.
