Whiteville ends Princeton's season in 1A east softball finals

WHITEVILLE -- Princeton endured a rain delay, a power outage but couldn't force a decisive third game in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A eastern regional softball championship series.
Whiteville scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on a for a 3-2 victory and series sweep of the Bulldogs on Friday evening. The Wolfpack (25-6) oppose either North Stokes or Hiwassee Dam in the state finals next Friday at Walnut Creek in Raleigh.
Princeton concluded the year 19-6 overall and finished regional runner-up for the second time since 2011.
Senior Tori Paul worked all six innings inside the circle. The right-hander yielded just four hits, walked three and struck out six in a 105-pitch outing.
Carson Braswell and Hailey Wood (RBI) paced the Bulldogs' offense with two hits apiece. Paul, Kelsey Peedin and Taylor Carroll, who connected on a double, each provided one hit.
Whiteville survived three errors on defense.
