GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Spencer Thomas scattered nine hits in a complete-game effort and fifth-seeded Georgia College stunned No. 3-ranked University of Mount Olive, 10-0, in opening-round play of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on Thursday afternoon.
The Trojans (40-12 overall) opposed in-state rival Catawba in an elimination-round game at noon today. UMO had its 23-game win streak snapped and endured its first shutout loss in 218 games.
Thomas (8-0) recorded just two strikeouts and walked two for the Bobcats, who have won six of eight postseason meetings against the Trojans. The defense turned three double plays behind Thomas, who threw 129 pitches and received offensive help from shortstop Daniel Bick and designated hitter Taylor Hinshaw.
Bick and Hinshaw combined for five hits, seven RBI and two home runs on the day.
Senior Derek Justice (9-2) endured the pitching loss for Mount Olive. The left-hander yielded six earned runs on six hits and walked three in 42/3 innings of action. Fellow left-hander Josh Frederick tossed the final 41/3 innings.
Rob Shipman turned in a 3-for-3 performance for the Trojans. Jay Gonzalez and Justin Manning provided two hits apiece. Luke Barry batted 1-for-4.
Georgia College (35-15) held a two-run advantage through four innings. The Bobcats erupted for six runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined.
