CBA's Burroughs breaks state HR softball record

HOLLYWOOD -- Meredith Burroughs is the new North Carolina softball home run queen.

The Charles B. Aycock senior broke the state career home record (41) with a sixth-inning grand slam blast during a 10-2 victory over D.H. Conley on Wednesday evening.

"She came up to the plate in a perfect position to help her team get some insurance runs," second-year CBA head coach Emily Burke said. "They had to pitch to her, so she knew she had to be ready to attack the ball. It was a 'no-doubter' when it came off of the bat.

"It's a memorable moment for everyone (and) it couldn't happen to a better person, player or teammate."

Burroughs' fence-clearing shot -- her fifth of the season -- gave Aycock a commanding 9-1 lead. The North Carolina State commit concluded the night 2-for-4 with five RBI, a walk and two runs scored.

Izzy McCurry of T.C. Roberson held the previous state record of 40. Burroughs and North Mecklenburg alum Sarah Mooney share the single-season record of 19.

"Her team was extremely happy for her and proud of her," Burke said. "Having that at-bat happen in such a big game makes breaking the record that much sweet," Burke said. "She did it off of a solid pitcher.

Aycock pounded out 14 hits and avenged an earlier loss to the Vikings. Madison Walton (RBI) collected three hits. Besides Burroughs, four other players provided two hits apiece -- Allison Shingleton, Cierra Harris (RBI), Mackenzie Wheeler and Keeley Fulghum.

Abbie Walton and Connor Vinson (RBI) each supplied one hit.

Allie Phillips earned the victory inside the pitcher's circle. The sophomore southpaw permitted two runs (one earned) on two hits and fanned one Conley batter in a four-inning stint.

Burroughs tossed three innings of three-hit, three-strikeout relief.

C.B. Aycock (11-2 overall, 9-1 ECC) entertains South Central today.
