HIGH POINT -- University of Mount Olive senior Josh Frederick has been named the Conference Carolinas pitcher-of-the-week.

A left-hander, Frederick (3-1) added a new statistical category to his record -- a win as a starter and a complete game. The Eastern Wayne alum started against Wingate University, a contest scheduled for seven innings, but needed an extra fame to earn the victory. He permitted one run on seven hits and logged seven strikeouts.

On senior day, Frederick threw 51/3 innings of four-hit relief in game two of the Trojans' victory over in-state league foe Belmont Abbey.

Frederick is one of five UMO hurlers to throw 40-plus innings this season. He has a 2.13 earned run average (ERA) in 14 appearances and leads the team with three saves.

Mount Olive (34-11 overall) concludes regular-season play this weekend at North Greenville (S.C.) University. Two victories assure the Trojans of the No. 1 seed for the Conference Carolinas tournament.

Golf

BROWNS SUMMITT -- Heavy rains led to unplayable conditions and forced the cancellation of final-round play of the 2014 Conference Carolinas men's and women's golf championships on Tuesday.

Team and individual scores from the first two rounds of the scheduled 54-hole event were deemed official. Erskine and Limestone claimed the men's and women's team titles, respectively.

Barton's Nicolas Fonseca emerged as the men's individual champion after firing the lowest second-round score, according to the conference's tie-breaking criteria. Fonseca entered the final day tied atop the leaderboard with North Greenville's Tucker McDonald and Limestone's Will Woodard.

All three players shot 2-under 142.

The University of Mount Olive finished fourth in men's competition with a four-player score of 595. Dalton Gore finished seventh at 2-over 146 and earned a spot on the 2014 Conference Carolinas all-tournament team.

Sebastian Andersen (148) and Mark O'Hara (150) shared 14th and 18th place, respectively. Jesus Valderrama contributed a 151, while Jefred Villalobos posted a 157.

UMO's Lovisa Tillstrom ended up ninth individually and claimed a spot on the all-tournament team. She helped lead the Trojans to a runner-up finish in the team competition with a 36-hole score of 158.

Emy Ohling tied for 12th with a 160. Anne Barboteau (161) shared 14th place. Julie Loennechen and Stefany King posted scores of 164 and 167, respectively.

Men's lacrosse

HIGH POINT -- University of Mount Olive sophomore Matt Shields has been selected the Conference Carolinas player-of-the-week.

An attackman, Shields scored a career-high and single-game record eight goals in a 20-3, non-conference triumph over Walsh (Ohio) College. Shields tallied five first-half goals and is the team leader with 47 this season.

The Trojans (10-2 overall) have been listed among the "others receiving votes" in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II top 15 poll each of the past five weeks.
