Crawford, Fortier each notch hat trick for Trojans

MOUNT OLIVE -- Alex Crawford and Michelle Fortier each posted a hat trick (three goals) during the University of Mount Olive's 19-0, non-conference triumph over in-state women's lacrosse foe Brevard College on Wednesday afternoon.
Sarah Snell's save in the final minute preserved the shutout.
Alysha Kulka notched the eventual game-winning goal just 43 seconds into the opening half. Fortier and Crawford each scored first-half goals for the Trojans, who held a comfortable 14-0 margin at intermission.
UMO owned a 41-8 advantage in shots.
The Trojans (6-2 overall) travel to Conference Carolinas in-state rival Belmont Abbey on Saturday.
Men's lacrosse
MOUNT OLIVE -- Dan Shields converted a man-up goal with 13.3 seconds left in overtime, and the University of Mount Olive turned back St. Leo (Fla.) University, 10-9, at Amon Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Trojans, who rallied from a four-goal deficit, extended their win streak to five matches. St. Leo was ranked in the USILA Division II top 15 poll earlier this month.
Matt Shields collected a pair of goals during a 3-0 surge to help Mount Olive pull to within 8-7 with 11 minutes left in regulation. St. Leo tallied goal, but the Trojans' Stephen Bowlan answered around the seven-minute mark.
Nico Shewey tallied the equalizer on an assist from Shields.
The teams traded turnovers the remainder of regulation and throughout overtime. A body-check penalty gave UMO the man-up advantage with 47 seconds left and set the table for Shields' game-winning goal.
The Trojans (7-1 overall) entertain Conference Carolinas foe Lees-McRae on Saturday and Florida Tech on Sunday.
Baseball
SALISBURY -- Bradon Reitano and Justin Manning combined for five hits during the University of Mount Olive's 6-5, non-conference loss to in-state nemesis Catawba on Wednesday afternoon.
The Indians swept the regular-season series.
Reitano finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Manning batted 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Rob Shipman plated Reitano with an RBI double to put Mount Olive ahead 4-3 in the seventh inning. Manning extended the Trojans' advantage to 5-3 with a two-out, RBI single in the ninth.
Catawba answered with a three-run rally that ended with T.J. Wharton's two-out, walk-off single. Wharton concluded the day with two hits in five official plate appearances.
Zak Orrison contributed two hits for the Trojans, who dropped to 17-10 overall heading into this weekend's pivotal Conference Carolinas series against No. 23-ranked Erskine (S.C.) College.
Men's volleyball
MOUNT OLIVE -- Angel Dache pounded out 15 kills during the University of Mount Olive's 16-25, 20-25, 25-23, 19-25 loss to Ivy League member Princeton University on Wednesday evening.
Dache served three aces and logged five blocks for the Trojans, who dropped to 10-10 overall this season. Mike Mann posted a match-high seven blocks, while Lewis Einarson delivered eight kills with just one attack error on the night.
Quaid Marin dished out 37 assists.
Mount Olive resumes Conference Carolinas play with weekend matches at Lees-McRae (Friday) and King (Saturday).
Softball
MOUNT OLIVE -- Tiffany Hawley swatted a home run in the opener and Ashleigh Mason recorded two hits in the nightcap during the University of Mount Olive's doubleheader loss to Conferene Carolinas foe Erskine (S.C.) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Flying Fleet prevailed 5-4 and 3-0 on the Nancy Chapman Cassell Field diamond. The Trojans fell to 9-18 overall and 0-2 against league opposition this season.
Madison Johnston and Lauren Smith each endured a pitching loss for Mount Olive, which plays host to North Greenville (S.C.) on Friday.
