Trojans' Kines throws complete game in opener

MOUNT OLIVE -- Gunner Kines threw a complete-game shutout in the opener as the University of Mount Olive split a non-conference doubleheader against Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon.
Kines logged 10 strikeouts in the Trojans' 5-0 win in the opener. Bradon Reitano swatted a first-inning, two-out home run.
Will Martin belted a fifth-inning homer.
Florida Southern took the nightcap, 6-4, in extra innings. The Moccasins (10-6 overall) pushed two runs across in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch and two errors.
UMO sophomore Zak Orrison ripped a game-tying, two-RBI homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. His blast came after Florida Southern grabbed a 4-2 lead through 4 1/2 innings of action.
The teams conclude the three-game series today. First pitch is 1 p.m. at Scarborough Field.
Men's lacrosse
COKER, S.C. -- Matt Shields and Stephen Bowlan each notched a hat trick (three goals) during the University of Mount Olive's 13-6, non-conference thrashing of Coker (S.C.) on Saturday afternoon.
Shields handed out three assists for the Trojans, who improved to 3-1 overall this season. Nico Shewey provided two goals and two assists, while Dan Shields contributed two goals and one assist.
UMO took 47 shots on goal.
Trojan goalkeeper Ross Bowman logged nine of his 10 saves in the second half.
Women's lacrosse
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- No. 3-ranked Limestone scored 15 first-half goals and handed the University of Mount Olive a 21-0 loss in Conference Carolinas play Saturday afternoon.
Katie Farrell tallied eight goals and two assists for the Saints.
The Trojan women attempted five shots. Keeper Hannah Knight recorded nine saves.
Mount Olive (3-1 overall, 1-1 CC) travels to the University of Tampa on March 6.
Men's volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Angel Dache and Lewis Einarson collected six kills apiece in the University of Mount Olive's 15-25, 9-25, 20-25 loss against No. 14-ranked Ball State University on Saturday evening.
Quaid Marin dished out 19 assists for an offense that recorded a minus-.133 hitting percentage against the Cardinals. Garrett Dimm contributed four kills.
Keaton Marin led the defense with 11 digs.
Dache pounded out 10 kills and Marin distributed 26 assists in the Trojans' 23-25, 13-25, 23-25 loss against Division I member Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne on Friday evening.
Steven Cruse contributed nine kills. Keaton Marin shared match-high honors with nine digs.
The Trojans (7-9 overall) return home March 11 for a Conference Carolinas contest against in-state foe Pfeiffer University. First serve is 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
Men's tennis
MOUNT OLIVE -- The University of Mount Olive swept the doubles courts and handed North Greenville a 6-3 loss in Conference Carolinas action at the Walker Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
The tandems of Matt Finnerty-Henric Falkenberg, Edgar Bub-Rik Wolthuis and Brahm Moolman-Stan Roffe each prevailed in dominating fashion.
Bub, Finnerty and Roffe each claimed a singles.
The No. 30-ranked Trojans (9-1 overall, 3-0 CC) travel to North Georgia on Monday, and visit USC Aiken the following afternoon.
Women's tennis
MOUNT OLIVE -- The University of Mount Olive shut out North Greenville in doubles play, and cruised to a 7-2 win on the Conference Carolinas scene Friday afternoon.
Francesca Ceppi, Alejandra Hernandez, Roxanne Chouinard and Paulina Delgado each triumphed in singles play. Ceppi-Chouinard, Hernandez-Matte Beloso and Delgado-Samara Paldinho completed the doubles sweep.
The Trojan women (7-2 overall, 2-1 CC) visit North Georgia on Monday and are the guests of USC Aiken on Tuesday.
