Mocs take series finale from Trojans

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive couldn't piece together a rally in an 8-7 loss on Sunday afternoon to Florida Southern at Scarborough Field.

The Mocs took two out of three games in the series from the Trojans.

Mount Olive's Rob Shipman went 2-for-3 at the plate with three walks and an RBI.

Florida Southern put the go ahead run on in the top of the eleventh as Keith Curcio got on by way on the fielder's choice. Curcio stole second one out later and Chris Dennis knocked him in with a single past the diving Zak Orrison and the Moccasins had the lead 8-7.

Mount Olive got the tying run on base but failed to score.

The Trojans return to action on Tuesday at Lander. Game time is 5 p.m.

Track and field

FAIRFAX, Va. -- University of Mount Olive clinched a NCAA Division II Men's Track and Field berth in the distance medley relay as the Trojans competed in the George Mason University Last Chance Meet on Sunday.

Karl Goodman, Aki Kitagawa, Dylan Lafond and Jacob Urys recorded the fourth fastest time in the nation this season.

The Trojan quartet posted a time of 9:57.89 in the event to beat their own school record by three seconds and came within four seconds of this season's best time.

The 2014 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championship takes place March 14-15 in Winston-Salem at JDL Fast Track, which was the site of the Conference Carolinas Championship, won by Mount Olive.

Softball

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Kalie Smith's first-inning RBI doubleand Erin Brogan's two-run single in the top of the fourth staked Mount Olive to a 4-1 lead before Bellarmine rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of a 6-4 win on Sunday..

Mount Olive continues its spring break trip Tuesday as the Trojans travel to Milledgeville, Ga., to take on Georgia College in a non-conference doubleheader. Game time is 4 p.m
