Goldsboro scored two points in the final five minutes, but managed to survive for a 50-49 win over North Lenoir in semifinal-round play of the Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference tournament Wednesday evening.
The Cougars visit Kinston on Friday in the tournament finals.
Tyona Moses led Goldsboro with 10 points before fouling out with fewer than five minutes to play. Destini Covington contributed nine points and Amari Thompson added eight.
Alyssa Borja finished with 16 points for the Hawks and Quoya Porter had 14.
The Cougars (12-11 overall) led by as many as 13 points in the first half and held a 48-36 advantage early in the fourth quarter.
North Lenoir used a 13-0 run to take a 49-48 lead on Erica Lee's steal and layup with fewer than 60 seconds left. Covington calmly sank two free throws with 26 seconds to play that gave Goldsboro the lead for good at 50-49.
The Cougars managed to run out the clock and earn their fourth win of the season in games decided by fewer than 10 points.
"The girls worked together, and they hustled toward the end and that's what helped us come out on top," Goldsboro head coach LaTina Bullock Davis said. "We struggled a lot when (Moses) fouled out because she is a big part of our offense. We were able to spread the floor and run some time off the clock."
