Reed scores career-high 24 points in UMO road win

BANNER ELK -- Dominique Reed scored a career-high 24 points, and the University of Mount Olive men's basketball team rolled past in-state Conference Carolinas foe Lees-McRae, 93-65, on Wednesday evening.
Reed pulled down seven rebounds for the Trojans, who improved to 16-8 overall and 10-4 against league opposition this season. Dontrell Brite provided 21 points, while Kendall Hargrove chipped in 19.
Ewon Wright supplied 11 points.
Reed's layup with 11:22 left in the opening half broke the fifth tie of the game. Wright pushed the lead to 49-32 with a pair of 3-pointers just before halftime.
UMO led by as many as 28 points in the second half.
The Trojans return to action Saturday at Limestone (S.C.) College.
Women's basketball
BANNER ELK -- The University of Mount Olive pulled to within three points in the final 30 seconds, but dropped an 80-73 decision to Conference Carolinas women's basketball foe Lees-McRae on Wednesday evening.
Kirksten Mitchell paced four Trojans in double figures with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Katie Paschal collected 15 points, while Andrea Jones and Ty Wallace scored 13 points apiece.
Jasmine McDonald pulled down 10 rebounds.
UMO trailed the entire game.
Paschal hit a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left and after Lees-McRae missed the front end of a one-and-one, Jones followed with her third 3-pointer of the night to pull the Trojans to within 76-73 with 18 seconds remaining.
Lees-McRae made it a two-possession game after Lauren Lewis hit a pair of free throws with 14 seconds. Mount Olive's comeback hopes were dashed when Lewis blocked a 3-point attempt with seven seconds left.
The Bobcats added a pair of free throws for the final score.
Mount Olive (15-9 overall, 10-6 CC) is the guest of Limestone (S.C.) on Saturday.
