Swimming
Cougars triumph
* Goldsboro emerged victorious on the boys' side of an 11-team swim meet at the Goldsboro Family YMCA on Monday night.
The Cougars finished with 95 team points in first place. Eastern Wayne was fourth, Southern Wayne sixth, C.B. Aycock seventh and Rosewood eighth.
Goldsboro's boys won the 200 yard medley relay. Zach Darden finished first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly for the Cougars. Timmy Vick won the 100-yard breaststroke and Victor Prezbindowski swam third. Goldsboro also won the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Bradley Makdad paced Eastern Wayne with a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke. Will Sampson added a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle.
Southern Wayne was led by Austin Edgecombe's first-place swim in the 200 freestyle and third place effort in the 500 freestyle. Brandon Murray-Cruz finished third in the 100 backstroke.
Kodey Silknitter won the 500 freestyle and was second in the 200 individual medley for Rosewood. Wesley Chandler was third in the 100 backstroke.
C.B. Aycock's Devin Hall emerged the diving champion on the boys' side of the ledger. Wayne Country Day's Payton Meadows won the girls' diving event.
On the girls' side of the swimming scoresheet, Clinton High School emerged victorious with 108 team points. Eastern Wayne was second and Goldsboro third. Southern Wayne finished seventh, Rosewood eighth and C.B. Aycock 11th.
Tricia Malcolm and Briana Applegarth finished second and third respectively in the 50 freestyle for Eastern Wayne. Malcolm was also second in the 100 freestyle. Cheyenne Craft won the 100-yard backstroke. The Warriors also win the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Matti Lyon won the 200 freestyle for the Cougars and was second in the 200 individual medley. Kaylee Lyon won the 100-yard butterfly. Olivia Pual was third in the 500 freestyle.
Chloe Edwards finished second in the 100 backstroke and third in the 100 butterfly for Southern Wayne. Chloee Britt touched the wall third in the 200 freestyle.
Rebecca Fitzmorris finished second in the 100-yard backstroke for Rosewood.
Boys' basketball
Greene Central 59, Cleveland 55
* CLAYTON -- Greene Central overcame a slow start and defeated Cleveland 59-55 in nonconference basketball action on Monday night.
Javan Rozelle led the Rams with 18 points. Brandon Belcher added 14 points in the win.
Greene Central (8-5 overall) opens Eastern Carolina 2-A Conference play on Friday at Ayden-Grifton.
Middle schools
* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 34, Greenwood 8 -- Norwayne remained unbeaten with a 34-8 win over Greenwood on Monday afternoon. Hannah Benson led the Cobras with 12 points. Tyona Barnes paced the Greenwood attack with five points. Norwayne (7-0 overall) travels to Rosewood on Thursday.
