Eastern Wayne needed a physical runner between the tackles since tailback Kamone Best battled a gimpy ankle and West Carteret took away the edge in the running game.

Chris Allen answered the bell. He rushed for a team-high 69 yards on 12 carries and routinely dragged two and three defenders as he gained valuable yards after contact. Eight of Allen's 12 rushes covered five or more yards.

"KK was a little banged up and Chris stepped up in his place," Warriors head coach Bubba Williams said. "Chris has been around for two years. He filled in nicely in that spot.

Solid defense

PRINCETON -- Starting on offense first relaxed the defense.

Believing in yourself helped, too.

Undaunted by Granville Central's potent passing attack, the Bulldogs forced two consecutive three-and-out series. The Panthers ran six offensive plays that included a sack and three tackles for loss yardage.

"Our defensive staff did a good job of preparing these guys and putting them in position to make the plays," PHS head coach Derrick Minor said. "When a defense can shut down a pretty potent offense passing the ball and do it early, all I can say is I'm proud of them.

"The guys came out and believed from the beginning that they could win. That's what impressed me the most."

Granville Central finished 2 of 11 on third-down conversions and committed three turnovers, which led to 14 points.

Look who it is

Eastern Wayne's big-play offense may add another weapon, junior Malik Richard, to its arsenal against Southern Nash on Friday.

The Warriors' 6-foot-2 junior receiver led the Warriors with 20 receptions for 392 yards and three touchdowns before sitting out with a finger injury.

A second chance

PRINCETON -- Don't fall behind early.

Princeton can't do that again during its second meeting against No. 1-ranked and unbeaten James Kenan. The Dogs spotted the Tigers a 20-point lead on Sept. 27.

The key to the rematch?

"Playing relentless, not being scared and never letting up," Princeton linebacker Cody Garner said. "If we don't spot them 20 points, we should be fine."
