Spring Creek rolls over Perquimans in 1A soccer playoffs

SEVEN SPRINGS -- An early wake-up call seemed to do Spring Creek some good on Wednesday night.

The fifth-seeded Gators gave up a goal in the second minute to Perquimans, but rallied for an easy 10-2 victory in the opening round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A state soccer playoffs.

Spring Creek travels to fourth-seeded Tarboro for a second-round game at 6 p.m. Saturday.

"We looked like we were the ones who got off the bus in the first 10 minutes," Spring Creek head coach Linda Salter said. "We were a little sluggish, but I think that (Perquimans) early goal kind of got us back into the moment."

The Pirates got on the board in the second minute when Bishop Smith booted home a loose ball.

Spring Creek answered with a vengeance.

The Gators tied the game in the 13th minute on a goal from Otto Binar. Ivan Lemus added a goal off of a Binar assist in the 18th minute. David Vega made the score 3-0 when he converted a shot in the 22nd minute.

Binar took over from there and added two goals, in the 38th and 39th minute respectively, and pushed the Gators' lead to 5-1 at halftime.

"Having Otto back healthy is a huge boost for our offense," Salter said. "He is a great finisher, but he also is able to see his teammates and make quality passes to set things up for other guys."

Both teams found plenty of time for reserve players in the second half. Perquimans does not have girls' soccer, so the Pirates field a co-ed team this season.

Vega completed his hat trick for Spring Creek with two second-half goals. Tony Huerta, Alex Ambriz and Giovani Avila also scored one goal apiece in the win.

"We wanted each of our seniors to score a goal this season and we accomplished that," Salter said. "Tony (Huerta) normally plays defense, but tonight we were able to move him up and he scored, so now all of our seniors have a goal."

Chili Moore capped Perquimans' scoring in the 63rd minute.

Spring Creek (14-3-1 overall) finished with a 20-4 advantage in shots on goal.
