ROSEBORO -- Lakewood scored on the final play of the first half and held on defensively to defeat Rosewood, 14-7, in a Carolina 1-A Conference football game at Branch Pope Field on Friday evening.
The Eagles jumped out to an early advantage when Jacob Sasser plunged into the end zone from one yard out.
Lakewood answered with a touchdown on the ensuing possession and grabbed the lead when J.J. Tanner hit Austin Tanner with a 40-yard scoring strike to end the half.
"I'm very happy and proud of our team's effort through out the game," Rosewood head coach Robert Britt said. "However, we made two mistakes on special teams which led to both of their touchdowns."
Jamari McGown led Rosewood with 10 carries for 54 yards. McGown caught one pass for 60 yards. Sasser finished with three completions for 81 yards on the night.
Rosewood (3-5 overall, 1-2 CC) visits North Duplin next Friday, while Lakewood is the guest of No. 1-ranked James Kenan.
D.H. Conley 54,
Southern Wayne 7
* DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne hung tough in the first half, but D.H. Conley's stout defense and big-play offense enabled the Vikings to claim a 54-7 win in Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference play Friday evening.
Tyaire Allen scored the Saints' lone touchdown -- a 4-yard run in the second quarter that closed the Vikings' gap to 21-7 at halftime.
Southern Wayne couldn't sustain any offensive momentum in the second half and finished with 62 yards of total offense for the game.
"Offensively, we struggled to block their front eight defensive players and just did not hit the right holes at times as well," Southern Wayne head coach David Lee said. "You're not going to win many ballgames with under 100 yards of total offense. I thought Tyaire stepped in (at quarterback) in the wake of Jacob (Hollingsworth's) injury and did a good job tonight."
Southern Wayne (2-5 overall, 0-2 ECC) is the guest of South Central next Friday.
J.H. Rose 34, C.B. Aycock 14
* PIKEVILLE -- J.H. Rose used a big third quarter to break open a close game en route to a 34-14 win over Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference foe Charles B. Aycock at Hardy Talton Stadium on Friday evening.
The Golden Falcons hung around in the first half thanks to a pair of long drives by the offense. T.J. Morrow found Michael Eutsey with a touchdown pass in the second quarter to pull Aycock to within 14-7.
The Rampants answered the call in the second half with a pair of rushing touchdowns that put the game away.
Morrow and Eutsey connected for a second time in the fourth quarter to complete the 34-14 final.
Morrow led the Golden Falcons with 131 yards on 10 completions. Eutsey finished with 52 yards receiving and 23 rushing. Neil Clark paced Aycock's ground game with 126 yards on 24 carries.
Tyree McNair led the Golden Falcons' defense with seven tackles.
C.B. Aycock (4-4 overall, 1-2 ECC) travels to D.H. Conley next Friday.
