Wayne Country Day put the finishing touches on its Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference championship with a 9-0 victory over Freedom Christian on Monday afternoon.
And the Chargers welcomed back Gianna Democko, too.
After missing half of the season with a foot injury, Democko triumphed in her return and helped Wayne Country Day secure the outcome in singles play. Taylor Willman, Jennifer Potts, Ally Willman, Mollie Catherine McDonald and Meredith Roethling each collected a singles point.
Democko-T. Willman, Potts-A. Willman and McDonald-Margaux Pope completed the sweep in doubles.
Wayne Country Day clinched the automatic bid to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs. The Chargers (16-2 overall, 10-0 CPIC) are projected to receive a No. 2 seed and opening-round bye.
