Trojan volleyball team ends 0-7 start

ELIZABETH CITY -- Nicole Karas served a career- and match-high eight aces and Mount Olive College snapped a seven-game skid with a 25-16, 25-23, 25-23 victory over in-state volleyball rival Elizabeth City State on Tuesday evening.

Karas also handed out 28 assists. Lauren Lee contributed nine kills and eight digs. Carly White recorded nine kills and two blocks. Sarah Watkins added seven kills and eight digs.

Dezirae Mackey posted two blocks.

The Trojans (1-7 overall) open Conference Carolinas play at home Friday against North Greenville (S.C.) University. MOC entertains Erskine (S.C.) on Saturday afternoon.

Men's tennis

SUMTER, S.C. -- Mount Olive College sophomore Matthew Finnerty knocked off three of the top four seeds and emerged the Group A men's singles champion during the Conference Carolinas fall men's tennis tournament.

The event is used to determine rankings for the spring season.

Finnerty, who was unseeded, handed top-seeded Loic Minery of Pfeiffer a 6-3, 6-3 defeat in the title match. Finnerty upended MOC teammate Edgar Bub and Barton's Rafael Ruiz in quarterfinal- and semifinal-round play.

Bub-Rik Wolthuis reached the finals in Group A men's doubles. Teammates Brahm Moolman-Stanley Roffe finished runners-up in Group B doubles action.

Women's tennis

SUMTER, S.C. -- Mount Olive's unseeded tandem of Maite Belloso-Alejandra Hernandez claimed the Group B women's doubles crown during the Conference Carolinas women's fall tournament.

The Trojans' Francesa Ceppi shared the Group A women's singles title since the final match was not played. Teammate Samara Paldinho endured the same fate in Group B singles action.

Men's golf

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Sebastian Andersen tied for second in individual play and Mount Olive College shared fourth place as a team during the two-day Kiawah Island Men's Golf Invitational.

Andersen fired a 2-under par 142 and was just one of eight golfers to break par during the 36-hole event. Dalton Gore (149) tied for 26th, while Jesus Valderama (150) tied for 30th.

Mark O'Hara (151) and Jeff Villalobos (151) shared 35th place.

The Trojans posted a two-day team score of 589 and tied with No. 20-ranked Armstrong (Ga.) University.
