Goldsboro girls stay perfect in Carolina 1-A play

Goldsboro survived the "danger game."

Freshman Tyona Moses paced three players in double figures with 17 points and Goldsboro handed Ayden-Grifton a 55-25 defeat in a Carolina 1-A Conference contest at Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

Senior Brandy Johnson, plagued by foul trouble, poured in 14 second-half points and Talaya Lassiter chipped in 12. The Cougars (9-5 overall, 4-0 CC) have won 34 consecutive Carolina Conference regular-season games.

"Ayden-Grifton has a pretty good team and has lost some players like we did," third-year Goldsboro coach LaTina Bullock said. "They're in a rebuilding year like we are. You can never sleep on any team and everybody always comes ready to play Goldsboro.

"Every moment you have to be ready to play from start to finish."

The Chargers (4-11, 2-2) aggravated the Cougars with a deliberate-paced tempo in the opening half. The visitors attempted to stretch the defense and find open lanes to the basket, but Bullock's team held its ground.

Goldsboro led 14-5 after one period and entered halftime ahead 26-13.

Bullock made some slight adjustments after the break and the Cougars, the three-time defending Carolina champions, shot a blistering 60 percent (6 of 10) from the floor in the third period.

Ayden-Grifton never recovered and fell to 0-7 against Goldsboro in regular-season play since 2009.

"What pleased me was that even though we started out slow the first half, we came out the second half running our offense the right way, adjusting to their defense, making sure we got open cuts and moved the ball around better," Bullock said. "(The slow tempo) did frustrate them a little bit. They have to get used to attacking the zone gaps instead of standing around and looking."

The Cougars travel to Spring Creek today.
