Aycock grapplers thwart Eastern Wayne

Too close for comfort.

But Charles B. Aycock prevailed again.

The Golden Falcons used a 22-0, match-ending run to thwart county archrival Eastern Wayne, 40-34, on the wrestling mat Saturday afternoon at New Hope.

The Warriors prevailed in seven of the first nine contested bouts and seized a 34-18 advantage. Romario Torres pinned Aycock's Trent Marquard during the early stages of the second period at 132 pounds.

Senior Daniel Romo knotted the match score at 6-6 with a first-period pin over Eastern Wayne's Kevon Tune. But the Warriors, who have never beaten the Golden Falcons, took command with three consecutive victories -- Craig Smith's decision at 145 pounds, Justice Johnson's pin at 152 and Quadrick Williams' 7-6 conquest of previously-unbeaten Khaleil Owens at 160.

Williams improved to 17-3 this season.

Broc Doyle, one of four Aycock grapplers to end the day 4-0, momentarily stopped the surge with a 59-second pin over Askel Stanton. Eastern Wayne answered with wins from Rashaun Pridgen (182), Jamel Barrett (195) and heavyweight Bryan Wooten.

Aycock exposed its opponent's weakness in the final four matches.

Blake Davis drew a forfeit at 106 pounds, Zack Howard pinned Cameron Martin at 113 and newcomer Jacob Dickenson easily handled Brice Heller, 19-5, in their 120-pound bout.

Returning starter Jordan Bailey sealed the comeback with a 23-second pin over 126-pounder Josh Ginnity.

The Golden Falcons (12-2 overall) concluded the five-team, non-conference dual with a 4-0 worksheet. They handed Rosewood a 49-29 loss, shut out Princeton 82-0 and triumphed 45-33 over East Carteret.

Howard, Bailey and Flores each posted a 4-0 record. Romo went 3-0, while Landon Moore returned from a shoulder injury and logged two wins in two outings.

"It was a great response to the disappointing loss last Wednesday night to Cleveland," CBA head coach Marc Peck said. "Everyone got a shot at the lineup and got some mat time."

Eastern Wayne defeated Princeton and East Carteret, and squandered a 19-point advantage in a 47-35 loss to county foe Rosewood. Williams concluded the day 4-0. Barrett, Wooten and Craig Smith each won three matches.

Pridgen, Heller, Andre Smith and Torres picked up two wins apiece.

Rosewood senior Nick Quillen extended his unbeaten streak to 77 matches, while the Eagles (9-5) earned three dual-team wins. Individual results were not available.

Princeton exited 2-5 overall.
