Coker women upset MOC; Trojan men lose 6th straight game

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Siblings Amber and Autumn Lau, who finished with a game-high 24 points, scored 19 of Coker's final 34 points in a stunning 78-64 upset of previously-unbeaten Mount Olive College on the Conference Carolinas women's basketball scene Saturday afternoon.

The Trojan women endured their first loss in seven outings this season.

Tamara Nesmith paced Mount Olive with 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Kirksten Mitchell provided 11 points, while senior forward Alyssa Luebs contributed 11 points and six rebounds.

Jasmine McDonald added seven points, six rebounds and five steals.

MOC led 35-30 at halftime and maintained a three-possession advantage during the first 10 minutes of the second half. Nesmith's layup with 9:19 remaining in regulation matched the Trojans' biggest lead of the game.

Angie Lawrence's 3-pointer and Autumn Lau's layup helped the Cobras pull to within four points. Coker turned the momentum into a decisive run and bolstered the rally with a phenomenal 19 of 21 effort at the free throw line in the second half.

The Trojan women return home Wednesday for an in-state contest against South Atlantic Conference member Brevard. Tip-off is 5 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

Men

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Coker scored the game's first 10 points and never trailed in an 83-73 triumph over Mount Olive College in a Conference Carolinas men's basketball game Saturday afternoon.

Darrell Patterson pumped in a game- and career-high 23 points for the Trojans, who suffered their sixth consecutive defeat. Patterson eclipsed his previous career best of 22 points nine days earlier against USC Aiken.

Mahamed Ibrahim provided 17 points. Jordan McCain and Dory Hines chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. Kendall Hargrove pulled down seven rebounds.

Coker owned a 44-29 edge in team rebounds.

McCain's three-point play pulled the Trojans to within 31-29 with just over two minutes remaining before halftime. The Cobras led 33-29 at the break and steadily increased their advantage throughout the second half.

Patterson scored 11 points in a three-minute span that helped MOC climb to within 68-62 with 7:56 left in regulation. Coker answered the surge and eventually snapped a 23-game losing streak in the series.

MOC (1-7) returns home Wednesday against in-state rival Wingate. Tip-off is 7 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
