Simmons trails by one stroke

SOUTHERN PINES -- Defending state champion Tara Simmons finished with an opening-round 77, and trails South Brunswick's Ashley Sloup by one stroke in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A women's golf championships.
Simmons, a senior at Charles B. Aycock, leads West Henderson's Chandler Danielson by one shot. Five strokes separate the top six competitors heading into today's final round at Longleaf Golf and Country Club.
Play resumed at 9 this morning.
