Trojan men capture Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate championship

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Three Trojans fired under-par scores Tuesday and helped Mount Olive post its second-lowest team score in school history en route to the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate men's golf tournament championship.

Freshman Sebastian Anderson matched his first-round 69 to place second among the 80 competitors, one shot behind Barton's Daniel Claytor.

Mark O'Hara (71) and Philippe Tjantele (70) also broke par in the final round, and finished seventh and 17th overall, respectively. O'Hara (140), Dalton Gore (142) and Tjantele (143) moved into the top 15 all-time in the school record books for 36-hole scores.

Mount Olive needed all it could get to fend off the 15-team competition and post a two-day total of 563. The top seven teams were separated by 11 strokes.

The Trojans conclude their fall slate Oct. 29-30 at the McDonough Cup in Orlando, Fla.

Women's golf

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Mount Olive College freshman Virginia Lane followed up her school-record performance on Monday by posting the sixth-lowest 36-hole score in school history as the Trojans finished sixth in the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate women's golf tournament contested at the Sea Trail Golf Club.

Lane's two-day score of 152 was good enough for ninth in the 84-player field. Lane and teammate Emelie Andersson, who placed 13th with a 155, helped lead the Trojans to a sixth-place overall finish out of 15 teams with a 644.

Lane's performance on Monday broke the previous school record of 73 set twice by MOC graduate Valentina Urquiola and once by Andersson. Her 152 matches former Trojan Valentina Urquiola's score from the 2010 Dana Rader Intercollegiate. Andersson holds the school's 36-hole record with a 149 in the 2012 Dana Rader.

Andersson's efforts at Myrtle Beach ranks 11th all-time.

Joining the pair in the scoring column for Mount Olive were Julie Loennechen (164) in 31st; while Emy Ohling (173) took 56th and Stefany King (180) was 62nd.

Mount Olive returns to action October 8-9 at the King College Invitational in Bristol, Tenn.

Volleyball

FAYETTEVILLE -- Mount Olive saw its two-match winning streak snapped during a 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 loss to in-state foe Fayetteville State University on Tuesday evening.

Carly White led the Trojans with eight kills. Nicole Karas matched a career high with four aces to go with 15 assists. Nicole Sparks led Mount Olive defensively with 10 digs.

The Trojans were held to a season-low 1.5 team blocks.

MOC (7-9 overall) visits Queens University of Charlotte on Friday and is the guest of Pfeiffer on Saturday.
