CBA's Warrick notches six goals

DUDLEY -- Charles B. Aycock fired on all cylinders.

Southern Wayne sputtered.

The league-leading Golden Falcons notched two goals within a 33-second span early in the opening half and rolled to a 9-0 conquest of the Saints on a cloudy, breezy Thursday evening at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

Aycock (11-3-0 overall) claimed its 21st consecutive regular-season victory against Eastern Carolina 3-A opposition, and rose to 18-6-1 against county foes since 2008.

"The main thing we wanted to do was come out fast, and we did that early and often," CBA assistant coach Byron Adkins said. "That set the tone for the rest of the game. I was really pleased with tonight."

Striker Cheyenne Warrick logged six goals and dished out one assist for the Golden Falcons, who remained perfect in eight ECC outings this season. Warrick boosted her area-leading total to 43 goals and now has 98 points (43 goals, 12 assists) on the year.

Emily Borel scored twice and assisted on another goal, while sophomore Alex Strickland punched in a goal off Cheyenne Craft's assist just before halftime. Strickland also provided an assist.

"With Sam (Parrish) and Alex in the middle playing balls left and right (and with) Cheyenne up top ... once she gets the ball she draws three people to her," Adkins said. "Then you have Emily sitting up top waiting for the fruits of Cheyenne's triple team, so we're firing on all cylinders right now."

Aycock owned a 30-1 edge in shots.

Southern Wayne (4-7-4 overall, 1-5-2 ECC) missed three starters -- Cynthia Rivera (toe), Paola Rodriguez (appendicitis) and Mallory Gray (school trip). Their absences led to the Saints' inability to build an attack and distribute the ball forward to Dixie Ramirez.

A sharp-shooting freshman, Ramirez drew just one defender most of the night and had just two good touches on the ball.

"Those key people missing in key positions ...," SW head coach Michael Klemiuk said as his voiced trailed off. "Dixie never got into the offense. She's learning to being able to hold possession like she's supposed to and create for herself. (Rodriguez) is the one who controls the midfield, gets that ball forward to set up what we're going to do.

"Her, Dixie and Alva (Perez) work well together. It's hard to break down a defense like that, especially when you put just one shot on goal."

Keepers Alex Van-Meir and Julia Stamper combined for the Golden Falcons' third shutout in ECC play, and sixth overall this season.
