Preps digest: North Duplin hands Goldsboro mercy-rule loss in Carolina opener

Baseball

North Duplin 11, Goldsboro 1

* CALYPSO -- North Duplin opened its Carolina 1-A Conference baseball season with an 11-1 win over Goldsboro on Wednesday afternoon.

Larry White pitched a complete game for the Rebels and recorded 12 strikeouts.

White also led North Duplin at the plate with two hits. Konnor Brock added one hit and two RBI. Ryan Wolfe finished with one hit and one RBI.

North Duplin will entertain Princeton Tuesday, while Goldsboro travels to Rosewood on Monday.

Ashley 9, Southern Wayne 1

* WILMINGTON -- Southern Wayne failed to figure out Wilmington Ashley hitters throughout a 9-1 defeat on Wednesday afternoon.

Jackson Hayes suffered the loss on the pitcher's mound. Hayes allowed four runs over two innings of work.

Clayton Cashwell paced the Saints at the plate with a double. Jacob Sasser added an RBI single. Colton Chrisman had the only other hit for the Saints.

Southern Wayne (6-4 overall) plays host to North Lenoir on Friday.

Softball

North Duplin 26, Goldsboro 4

* CALYPSO -- North Duplin scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised past Goldsboro 26-4 in the Carolina 1-A Conference opener for both teams Wednesday.

Kayla Alphin earned the win in the pitcher's circle. Alphin allowed two hits and struck out six batters.

Alonna Pate emerged the Rebels' leading hitter with four. Ansley Hill added three hits in the win.

Brandy Johnson led the Cougars with two hits and one RBI.

North Duplin (5-3 overall, 1-0 CC) plays host to Princeton on Tuesday, while Goldsboro (2-5, 0-1) visits Rosewood on Monday.

Girls' soccer

Princeton 2-7, North Lenoir 0-0

* PRINCETON -- Jessica Brush tallied one goal and assisted on another goal during Princeton's 2-0, non-conference win over North Lenoir on Wednesday evening.

Kayla Dominguez assisted on Brush's goal. Ashley Jacobs scored off Brush's assist.

Bulldogs keeper Amber Hill recorded five saves and claimed her third shutout of the season between the pipes.

One day earlier, Brush, Jacobs and Jenna Woodard powered Princeton a 7-0 triumph over the Hawks. Brush scored twice and assisted on one goal. Jacobs logged a hat trick (three goals), while Woodard punched in two goals.

Abby Rubio and Jordan Johnson dished out two assists apiece.

Boys' tennis

C.B. Aycock 9, Triton 0

* ERWIN -- Charles B. Aycock dominated singles play and rolled to a 9-0 Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference win over Triton on Wednesday.

Will Hoff, Michael Kearney, Addison Vail, Austin Walker, Chas Hooks and Sam Chastain each prevailed during singled play.

The tandems of Hoff-Kearney, Vail-Walker and Hooks-Chastain won in doubles action.

C.B. Aycock (10-1 overall, 6-1 ECC) plays host to North Lenoir on Monday.

Eastern Wayne 9,

South Johnston 0

* FOUR OAKS -- Eastern Wayne made short work of South Johnston in a 9-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

Chaz Fitzpatrick, Russell Turner, Steven Taylor, Mitchell Kaspar, Sawyer Thompson and Cole Newsome each won their respective singles match.

The pairings of Fitzpatrick-Turner, Kaspar-Thompson and Taylor-Newsome each prevailed in doubles play.

Eastern Wayne (10-0 overall, 7-0 ECC) travels to Cleveland on Monday.

Boys' golf

Webber leads Conquerors

* RALEIGH -- Bryce Webber carded a nine-hole round of 37 and helped Faith Christian to a third-place finish during a four-team meet contested at Eagle Ridge on Tuesday afternoon.

Blake Floars added a 44 for the Conquerors. Teammates Hudson Coker and Raleigh Anderson fired rounds of 63 and 67, respectively.

Faith Christian returns to action Monday at Sanford Municipal Golf Course.

JV sports

* Girls' soccer: C.B. Aycock 3, Eastern Wayne 2 -- Lindsey Lloyd and Estephanie Ponce each scored a goal for the Warriors.
