Rosewood, James Kenan lead respective leagues after winter Cup competition

CHAPEL HILL -- Rosewood and James Kenan remain the front-runners in their respective conferences, while Charles B. Aycock lost some momentum during the winter in Wells Fargo Conference Cup competition.

The Eagles claimed regular-season championships in men's and women's indoor track, and placed second in wrestling to remain on the top perch in Carolina 1-A Conference play with 52 points. Archrival Princeton, which placed second in men's and women's basketball, has 47.5 points.

Spring Creek is third with 32 points. Ayden-Grifton (29.5), Goldsboro High (26.5) and North Duplin (18.5) round out the six-team league. Ayden-Grifton and Goldsboro claimed the men's and women's regular-season basketball championships, respectively.

James Kenan extended its lead over Lakewood to 5 1/2 points after winning the Tri-County 1-A men's basketball championship, and placing second in women's basketball. The Leopards, whose women reached the final four in the basketball playoffs, trail the Tigers 42-36.5.

Hobbton and Heide Trask share third place with 31 points. Wallace-Rose Hill (30.5) is fourth, followed by Union (28.5), Midway (27.5) and Pender (25).

The Golden Falcons claimed Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference championships in women's basketball, and men's and women's swimming; and placed second in wrestling. But they lost ground on Triton, which claimed three league titles of its own -- men's basketball, and men's and women's indoor track.

The Hawks lead the seven-team league with 79 points. Aycock is second with 70, followed by South Johnston with 62. Cleveland (59), Eastern Wayne (43.5), Southern Wayne (28) and North Lenoir (27.5) complete the scoring.

The Wells Fargo Cup award, sponsored by Wells Fargo and the N.C. High School Athletic Association, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state's four competitive classifications. Wachovia, now Wells Fargo, has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

The Wells Fargo Conference Cup is a companion to the Wells Fargo Cup. The Conference Cup is awarded to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each individual conference.
