Trojan baseball climbs in polls

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College posted a 5-0 record on the baseball diamond last week and vaulted to No. 14 in the latest College Baseball Lineup Division II top 30 poll.

The Trojans (18-6 overall) scored 36 runs in non-conference triumphs over Virginia State and California (Pa.) University, and swept a critical three-game series at Coker (S.C.) in Conference Carolinas East Division play.

MOC is ranked No. 30 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and travels to in-state nemesis Catawba College today for a non-conference doubleheader.

Men's golf

WILSON -- Kyle Simpson fired a second-round, 3-under par 69 and Mount Olive College placed fourth overall at the Barton College Men's Golf Intercollegiate contested at Wilson Country Club.

The Trojans concluded the 36-hole event with a team score of 598.

Kyle Ham posted a two-day total of 2-over par 146 and ended up tied for ninth in the individual standings. Jefred Villalobos placed 23rd overall, while Dalton Gore ended up 32nd. Simpson and Mark O'Hara finished play 35th and 69th overall, respectively.

Tennis

WILSON -- The Mount Olive College men's tennis team collected points on five of six singles courts, and dumped Conference Carolinas archrival Barton, 7-2, on Tuesday afternoon.

Third-seeded Francesca Ceppi rallied from an opening-set loss and the Trojan women swept the doubles in a 7-2 triumph over the Bulldogs.

The Trojan men (10-4 overall, 4-0 CC) received singles and doubles victories from Akio Mariano, Murilo Pelegrino, Diogo Sender and Brahm Moolman. Top-seeded Edgar Bub also prevailed in singles.

Barton's Alicia Lasry rolled to a 6-1 win in the first set before, but Ceppi bounced back in the next two sets, 6-3 and 10-8, to seal the overall outcome for Mount Olive. Teammates Molly Lentini, Pietra Viana and Patricia Guedes each posted a straight-set victory in singles.

Lentini-Viana won a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles.

The Trojan women (12-2, 4-1) extended their win streak to three.

Mount Olive entertains Coker (S.C.) College on Friday and in-state rival Queens University of Charlotte on Sunday.
