Preps digest: Rosewood girls stop Princeton in overtime

Rosewood 52, Princeton 51
* PRINCETON -- Rosewood hit big shots at critical times en route to a 52-51 overtime victory over archrival Princeton on Friday night.
The Dawgs built a 13-2 lead after one quarter as the Eagles looked lost on offense. But Rosewood got itself together and rallied before the intermission.
The second half belonged to the Eagles as they erased a six-point deficit in the third period and took a 43-42 lead with two minutes to play. Princeton answered with a basket by Charlie Cox and a pair of free throws from Savanna Massengill, and forged ahead 46-43 with 50 seconds to play.
Alicia Burns sent the game to overtime with a 3-point shot. Holly Heath put the visitors ahead 48-46 on the Eagles' first possession of extra time and Rosewood never trailed again.
Burns led Rosewood with 25 points. Heath added nine points.
Massengill paced Princeton with 21 points while Nicole Melvin finished with 12.
Princeton (13-9 overall, 7-3 CC) drew the No. 2 seed and an opening-round bye in the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament, which begins Monday evening at Rosewood. The Eagles (7-14, 5-5) grabbed the No. 3 seed and play host to Spring Creek in one quarterfinal, while the fourth-seeded Chargers tangle with North Duplin in the other quarterfinal contest.

* CALYPSO -- North Duplin outscored Spring Creek 22-2 in the second quarter and rolled to a 54-29 win in the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season finale for both teams Friday night.
Jessica Jones led the Rebels (5-14, 3-7 CC) with 15 points. Lea Taylor supplied 12 points. Jones suffered an ankle injury before returning in the second quarter to provide a spark.
"Jessica starting hit shots," North Duplin head coach John Oliver said. "I think when we returned she really fired up her teammates."
Alyssa Borja and Janna Price scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Gators.
Wayne Country Day 52, Greenfield 21
* WILSON -- Wayne Country Day swept the regular-season series from Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference archrival Greenfield with a 52-21 win on Friday night.
Catherine Ford paced the Chargers with 18 points. Sarah Best added nine points in the win.
Wayne Country Day (11-6 overall, 4-2 CPIC) travels to Faith Christian of Rocky Mount for the semifinals of the CPIC tournament on Feb. 17.
Boys' basketball
Greenfield 97, Wayne Country Day 61
* WILSON -- Regular-season champion Greenfield erupted with a 15-0, game-opening run and rolled past Wayne Country Day, 97-51, in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A regular-season finale for both teams Friday evening.
"(We) never saw much daylight from there," said Chargers head coach Terry Jones.
Brandon McCarter and Deshar Thomas pumped in 20 and 16 points, respectively, for WCDS. Senior guard Hil Tanner knocked down 10 points.
The Chargers drew the No. 3 seed and oppose No. 2 Oakwood in the CPIC tournament semifinals on Friday. Tip-off is 8 p.m. at Faith Christian of Rocky Mount.
JV sports
* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 70, Ayden-Grifton 56 -- Joe Baker pumped in 17 points and the Cougars polished off their second Carolina 1-A Conference championship in the past three years. Jaylen Moore and Taylin Davis contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively, in the season-ending win.
* Girls' basketball: Wayne Country Day 40, Greenfield 10 -- Taylor Sledge led the way for the Chargers with 14 points and six rebounds. Bailee Creger added 11 points and 10 boards. Logan Harrell tallied eight points. Wayne Country Day improved to 8-6 overall.
* Boys' basketball: Greenfield 47, Wayne Country Day 34 -- Jamal Forde and Ramel Carpenter collected 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the Chargers' road loss. Tyler Talton added seven points for WCDS, which fell to 15-4 and earned a share of the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A regular-season championship. The Chargers face Oakwood in the CPIC tournament on Thursday at Faith Christian of Rocky Mount.
* Boys' basketball: North Duplin 68, Spring Creek 36 -- No other details reported.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 41, Greenfield 27 -- Preston Edwards led Wayne Country Day with 20 points. Tony Townsend added eight points. Wayne Country Day improved to 17-1 overall and earned a share of the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference regular-season crown. The top-seeded Chargers play Epiphany in the CPIC tournament Tuesday at Faith Christian of Rocky Mount.
