Swimming

Eagles battle in CCC meet

* RALEIGH -- The Wayne Christian girls' swim team captured third place overall and the boys placed fourth during the season-ending Carolina Christian 1-A Conference championship meet Monday evening.

The girls' 200-yard freestyle relay of Danielle Gentry, Amy Clarke, Molly Glover and Kristina Rousay emerged the CCC runner-up. Glover touched the wall fourth in a personal-best 39.01 seconds in the 50 free. Teammates Clarke (sixth), Rousay (seventh) and Jordan Anderson (ninth) also competed in the event.

Gentry placed fourth in the 100 free, while Anderson was eighth.

Senior Chase Darden claimed the CCC title in the 50 free and the was CCC bronze medalist in the 100 free. Cameron Foss ended up sixth in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free. Daniel Glover took ninth in both the 50 and 100 free events.

Darden and Danielle Gentry will represent the Eagles at the season-ending, N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A/2-A championships on Feb. 20.

"I am very proud of my team," said first-year WCS head coach Shelly Anderson. "They worked hard to get better and every one of them did just that."

Boys' basketball

James Kenan 74, Midway 68

* WARSAW -- Top-seeded James Kenan scored 13 points in the four minute overtime period and held on for a 74-68 win over Midway in the opening round of the Tri-County 1-A Conference boys basketball tournament on Monday night.

Michael Moore led the Tigers with a game-high 29 points. Andre Smith added 24 points.

Quincy Baggett paced the Midway offense with 22 points.

James Kenan (19-7 overall) will play Union in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday.

Faith Christian 72, Trinity-Greenville 57

* Wes Caudle led three players in double figures with 21 points, and Faith Christian turned back Trinity Christian-Greenville, 72-57, in the N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A finale for both teams Monday evening.

Michael Clarke and Silas Denlinger contributed 18 and 13 points, respectively, in the Conquerors' senior night win.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro Heat 24, Spring Creek 20 -- Thomas Vermillion collected eight points and dished out two assists in the Heat's regular-season finale. Harman Kaler contributed five points. Gavin Portela recorded four points and five steals. The Heat (3-11 overall) face the Wake Forest Lighthouse in an opening-round, NCHEAC quarterfinal game Friday.

* Girls' basketball: Wayne Christian 29, Christ Covenant 12 -- Kasey Norris pumped in eight points in the Eagles' opening-round tournament victory. Summer Rose and Brooke Slusher pulled down six rebounds apiece.
