GREENVILLE -- Terry Holland, director of athletics at East Carolina, said the Pirates have completed their 2012 non-conference football schedule by adding a home contest against in-state rival Appalachian State.

The game is Sept. 8 in Greenville.

ECU will renew a rivalry that covers 30 games in an 80-year span. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series 19-11, but the two programs have met only once since 1979 -- a 29-24 ECU victory at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Sept. 5, 2009.

"The revival of the East Carolina-Appalachian State football rivalry has already produced one exciting game," Holland said. "I know both institutions are looking forward to this second chapter with great anticipation."

Appalachian State, winner of three consecutive Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) national championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007 under coach Jerry Moore, has posted six 10-win seasons in the last seven years, captured six of the last seven Southern Conference titles and made seven-straight postseason appearances.

The Mountaineers' 79 victories since 2005 ranks first at the FCS level and stands second among all Division I programs, trailing only Boise State's total of 81.

The contest against the Pirates will also continue a 34-year streak of consecutive Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents on ASU schedules that recently have featured meetings against Michigan (2007), LSU (2008), East Carolina (2009), Florida (2010) and Virginia Tech (2011).
