Girls' golf

Simmons shares fourth place

* LEXINGTON -- Charles B. Aycock junior Tara Simmons tied for fourth place in the 2nd annual Tarheel Youth Golf Association State Championship contested at Sapona Country Club.

Simmons fired a two-day total of 154 and shared the spot with Cary's Sarah Bae, the N.C. Junior Girls' champion.

Chapel Hill's Emily Brooks claimed the title with a one-hole playoff victory over Raleigh's Evelyn Dole and Charlotte's Emily Stinson. The trio concluded regulation play tied at 153.

The TYGA is a division of the Carolinas Golf Association.

* Rosewood 28, Grantham 12 -- Amrei Atwell paced the Little Eagles' offense with two touchdowns. Christopher Hill and Phoenix Williams had one touchdown apiece. Trent Lancaster (interception), Tristin McKenna (fumble recovery), Brian Melgar and Case Kermode emerged the defensive leaders.
