Rosewood holds back Princeton soccer

PRINCETON -- Rosewood needed overtime to sweep the season series from archrival Princeton, 2-1, on Wednesday night in a Carolina 1-A Conference boys' soccer game.
In the end, the Eagles were just happy to win by any means necessary.
Freshman forward Tan Truong netted an improbable goal in the 87th minute and pushed the visitors ahead for good.
"It was one of those nights where we couldn't put away an easy shot," said Rosewood head coach Eddie Maldonado. "We missed a couple of one-on-one chances, but then (Truong) hit one from a crazy angle and it got us a win."
Princeton opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Trevor Haines scored off a throw-in by Josh Boykin. It was the Bulldogs' second shot on goal.
Rosewood appeared to tie the game in the 44th minute when Zach Syverson headed home a crossing pass from Truong. The goal was disallowed due to offsides.
Troung tied a the game 1-1 in the 51st minute when he seized a deflected pass and fired shot into the net from point-blank range. Bret Robinson's free kick glanced off of Matt Davis and ricocheted to Truong in front of a wide-open net.
"We had one too many defensive breakdowns tonight," said Princeton head coach Trent Heil. "We have been ale to play with the teams in our conference and we have made progress, but we just seem to make that one mistake that always costs us."
Princeton got the first scoring opportunity in overtime when Ethan Anderson fired a shot just inches above the crossbar in the 84th minute.
Rosewood mounted an attack off of the goal kick and maintained possession in the Princeton end. A corner kick led to a loose ball in front of the net and a subsequent shot by Robinson. The rebound bounced to Truong, who was positioned off the left post and hooked a shot around the post. The ball sailed over the head of the Princeton keeper and into the net.
"It was probably one of the tougher shots we got all night," said Maldonado. "It was a bad angle, a bad spot on the field, but Tan made it work"
Rosewood (4-8-1 overall, 4-1 CC) plays host to C.B. Aycock tonight at 6 p.m. Princeton (3-10-1, 2-3) travels to Spring Creek on Monday.
