C.B. Aycock downs Princeton soccer

PRINCETON -- Five-and-a-half weeks into its boys' soccer season, Charles B. Aycock continues to search for a proven scorer.

It might have found one Wednesday evening.

Trey Millard collected two goals in the first 15 minutes of the Golden Falcons' 3-1 non-conference victory over Princeton on the Fred Bartholomew Athletic Complex pitch. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

"We started well," said Aycock head coach Kevin Adkins.

Indeed.

Millard needed just 108 seconds to put the Golden Falcons on the board. Senior Ronnie Person started the play with a throw-in near the Aycock bench and Millard tucked away the loose ball for the 1-0 advantage.

The Golden Falcons (5-3-0 overall) continued to fire on goal and finally struck again in the 15th minute. Collin Zacharzuk ran onto a ball on the left side and crossed it into the 18-yard box. A diving Millard headed it into goal for the 2-0 lead.

Millard's quick, one-touch strikes were his first of the season in Aycock's offense, which averages 2.5 goals per match.

"The first 15 minutes we were sleeping ... weren't ready, weren't prepared and part of that is my fault," said first-year Princeton head coach Trent Heil. "The second half of the first half we started to play some ball, started to possess a little bit more."

Each team had good shape in the back, worked the ball through its respective midfield and attacked the goal. But neither the Golden Falcons nor Bulldogs (1-7-1) could consistently finish once they reached the 18-yard box.

Aycock out-shot Princeton 28-12.

"We seem to play so well up to the point when it's time to score," said Adkins. "We just can't find the right combination or the right time to pass the ball. There is still a lot of control work to be done."

The Golden Falcons stretched their advantage to 3-0 just before halftime.

Princeton got a bad touch on a ball and Aycock's Kyle Powell intercepted it near midfield. Powell dribbled between two defenders, coaxed Bulldog keeper Zach Parker (eight saves) off his line and tucked it just inside the near post.

It was Powell's first goal of the season.

"They hit their spot," said Heil.

The Dogs avoided the shutout eight minutes into the second half. Nathan Woodward received a pass from Juan Duran and connected on a one-touch strike past the outstretched gloves of Aycock keeper Nick Hilker.

Hilker finished with four saves.
