Volleyball
Princeton 3, Ayden-Grifton 0
* PRINCETON -- Carolina 1-A Conference co-leader Princeton swept visiting Ayden-Grifton 25-11, 25-12, 25-13 on Thursday evening.
Nicole Melvin provided eight kills and two blocks for the Bulldogs. Hannah Woodard and Amber Hill both recorded seven kills. Savanna Massengill added six kills and Megan Gerrell tallied five kills. Katlyn Peedin had 14 digs.
Princeton (10-2 overall, 4-0 CC) travels to Rosewood on Tuesday with first place in the conference on the line.
Triton 3, C.B. Aycock 0
* ERWIN -- Charles B. Aycock suffered a 25-22, 25-19, 26-24 loss at two-time defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference champion Triton on Thursday evening.
Connor Davis and Madison Mercer each tallied seven kills for the Golden Falcons. Mercer also had four blocks. Meredith Burroughs supplied six kills and four blocks.
Aycock (8-3 overall, 4-2 ECC) plays host to North Lenoir on Tuesday.
South Johnston 3, Eastern Wayne 1
* FOUR OAKS -- Eastern Wayne claimed the opening set, but South Johnston bounced back for an 18-25, 25-11, 25-20, 25-15 victory in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.
Kendra Nash dished out 12 assists for the Warriors. Brooke Doherty recorded six blocks, while freshman Rachel McCollum contributed six kills and five digs.
Eastern Wayne (4-9 overall, 0-7 ECC) travel to Cleveland on Tuesday.
Boys' soccer
C.B. Aycock 2, Wilson Fike 1
* WILSON -- Chase Thompson scored the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute and Charles B. Aycock picked up a much-needed, 2-1 non-conference win at Wilson Fike on Thursday night.
The Golden Falcons squandered a chance to take the lead in the 12th minute when they missed a penalty kick. Thompson's unassisted goal in the 20th minute put Aycock in front 1-0.
Fike tied the game early in the second half and the two teams remained deadlocked until Thompson's game-winner in the 60th minute.
Nick Hilker recorded eight saves in goal for the Golden Falcons. Cade Ivy, Tim Naughton and Kyle Powell led a strong effort by the Aycock defense.
The Golden Falcons (6-3-0 overall) entertain Southern Wayne on Monday.
Southern Wayne 1, Spring Creek 1
* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Southern Wayne and Spring Creek played to a 1-1 tie on Thursday.
Antonio Avila scored the Gators' lone goal.
The Saints travel to Charles B. Aycock on Monday, while the Gators begin defense of their Carolina 1-A Conference championship at Princeton on Wednesday.
Wilson Christian 6, Wayne Christian 1
* WILSON -- Wilson Christian scored three goals in both the first and second halves of a 6-1 win over Wayne Christian on Thursday afternoon.
Seth Slusher provided the Eagles' lone goal.
Wayne Christian (3-5-2 overall) visits Northwood on Monday.
North Lenoir 5, Cleveland 1
* North Lenoir stayed in the thick of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference race with a 5-1 win over Cleveland on Thursday evening.
Oscar Avila and Justin Shimer each scored two goals for the Hawks. Chastin Radford added a goal on an assist from Tyler Gray. Caleb Baird recorded six saves in goal.
North Lenoir (8-1-0 overall, 3-1 ECC) plays host to Eastern Wayne on Monday.
Hobbton 3, Rosewood 1
* Alexander Excalera scored three goals in Hobbton's 3-1 non-conference win at Rosewood on Thursday evening.
Bret Robinson scored for the Eagles in the second half.
Rosewood (0-8-1 overall) opens its Carolina 1-A Conference season at home Monday against archrival Princeton.
Cross country
Eagles finish second
* Wayne Christian's boys compiled a team score of 30 and finished second in a four-team meet contested Thursday at historic Waynesborough Park.
Epiphany captured first place with 28 points and Pope John Paul was third with a score of 70. Oakwood did not field enough runners to earn a score.
The Eagles' Connor Jones was the top male runner with a time of 18 minutes, two seconds. Teammates Spencer Foster (20:33) and Mark Sawyer (20:40) were fourth and fifth respectively.
Epiphany also won the girls' competition with 28 points.
Sara Allen was Wayne Christian's top female runner with a time of 25:21.
The Eagles return to action at Pope John Paul on Monday.
Girls' tennis
North Duplin 5, Goldsboro 4
* CALYPSO -- North Duplin claimed a pivotal point at No. 2 doubles and slipped past Carolina 1-A Conference foe Goldsboro 5-4 on Thursday afternoon.
Lea Taylor, Jasmin Quintanilla and Selena Quintanilla each collected singles wins for the Rebels. The doubles teams of Taylor-J. Quintanilla and S. Quintanilla-Casey Thornton were also victorious.
Mackensie Malham, Hunter Houtzer and Davis Houtzer all contributed singles victories for the Cougars. The team of Randa Boykin-Casey Hoggard also won.
North Duplin visits Rosewood on Tuesday.
C.B. Aycock 9, South Johnston 0
* FOUR OAKS -- Charles B. Aycock continued its dominance of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference competition with a 9-0 pounding of South Johnston on Thursday.
Brooke Barfield, Ashton Walker, Katie Gurley, Brittany Parrish, Misty Edwards and Caroline Bone each contributed a singles point for the Golden Falcons. The doubles teams of Barfield-Walker, Gurley-Edwards and Parrish-Bone were also victorious.
Aycock (16-0 overall, 9-0 ECC) plays host to Cleveland on Tuesday.
Wayne Christian 8, Eastern Wayne JV 1
* Wayne Christian earned an 8-1 win over Eastern Wayne's junior varsity team on Thursday.
Taylor Willman, Elizabeth Sutton, Bryanna Means, Abigail Easom and Miranda Taylor each provided a singles victory for the Eagles. The doubles teams of Taylor Willman-Sutton, Ally Willman-Means and Easom-Carla Benton also won.
Debbie Mitchell collected the Warriors' lone point at No. 3 singles.
Wayne Country Day 7, Village Christian 2
* Wayne Country Day defeated Village Christian 7-2 on Thursday afternoon at Wayne Community College.
Gianna Democko, Sarah Best, Mack Thompson, Mollie McDonald and Meredith Roethling each contributed a singles point for the Chargers. The doubles teams of Best-Thompson and Democko-Katherine Roethling were also victorious.
Wayne Country Day (5-0 overall) begins Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play Monday at Faith Christian of Rocky Mount.
JV football
C.B. Aycock 14, North Lenoir 0
* PIKEVILLE -- Jay Suber scored a rushing touchdown and Bobby Hampton added a score through the air as Charles B. Aycock turned back visiting North Lenoir 14-0 on Thursday evening.
Suber finished with 58 yards on the ground and Hampton added 22 yards rushing. Hampton was 2 for 3 passing for 49 yards.
Blake Merrill led the Golden Falcons with 16 tackles. Tristin O'Brien and Landon Moore each supplied 14 stops. Jackson Yelverton had 10 tackles and Jordan West added eight.
JV sports
* Volleyball: Triton d. C.B. Aycock 25-16, 25-11 -- Emily Borel finished with four kills for the Golden Falcons. Aycock (3-8 overall, 2-4 ECC) entertains North Lenoir on Monday.
* Volleyball: Rosewood d. North Duplin 25-18, 25-11 -- Haley Mercer contributed four kills for the Eagles. Kayla Hardy supplied five aces and four assists. Callie Thorton added two kills and two aces.
Middle schools
* Football: Norwayne d. Brogden 44-0 -- Juwon Friar, Brock Lanier, Caleb Gough, Rafe Rice and Holden Cox each scored an offensive touchdown for Norwayne. Friar also returned a fumble for a score. Christian Anderson also recovered a fumble. Damion Ellis, Ryan Dudley and Anderson led Norwayne in tackles. Norwayne visits Dillard next Thursday.
* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Brogden 25-10, 25-17, 25-7 -- Norwayne (4-1 overall) visits Spring Creek on Monday.
* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Mount Olive 25-14, 25-9, 25-10 -- Lexi Mercer finished with seven aces and three kills for the Eagles. Alyssa Garrison supplied five aces and two kills. The Eagles (4-1 overall) entertain Grantham on Monday.
* Soccer: Wilson Christian d. Wayne Christian 4-0 -- Graham Fussell recorded five saves for the Eagles.
