Triton tops Eastern Wayne soccer

Eastern Wayne played inspired soccer in a win over county rival Charles B. Aycock on Monday night.
The Warriors followed that effort with a lethargic performance on Wednesday and dropped a 5-1 decision to Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Triton.
"We looked tired out there tonight," Eastern Wayne head coach Jorg Wagner said. "I don't know if we have been going to hard at practice or what, but I know that Triton was the faster team and the more energetic team in this game."
The Hawks opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Houston Hamilton collected a rebound and fired a shot past the keeper. Eastern Wayne countered with a scoring chance just seconds later, but a shot from Deonte Davis hit the crossbar.
The score remained 1-0 until the half ended. That is when Triton forward Daniel Goff took over.
Goff scored the first of his four goals in the 58th minute as he ran between three Eastern Wayne defenders and fired a shot past the keeper. Goff scored again in the 60th minute on an assist by Cody Snodgrass.
"Daniel is a special player," Triton head coach Joey Mariello said. "He has 22 goals in nine games so far this season and that doesn't even tell the whole story of how much he does for us."
Goff and Snodgrass hooked up for another goal in the 66th minute and Goff scored on his own in the 69th minute. Four goals in 11 minutes was a new high point for Goff and the Hawks on the season.
It was a low point for the Warriors.
The lone highlight for the home side came in the 65th minute when Ethan Zadrozny collected a corner kick from Ryan Jackson and fired home a shot.
"There are some nights when nothing goes your way," Wagner said. "The bad thing is that this loss sets us back as far as the conference standings."
Eastern Wayne (3-6-0 overall) dropped to 3-2 in the league ranks and sits in a third-place tie with Triton behind defending league champion South Johnston and second-place North Lenoir. The Warriors will have a chance to make a move on Monday night when they travel to North Lenoir.
