PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock played one of its best matches of the season and downed county rival Southern Wayne 25-8, 25-16, 25-13 on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference volleyball scene Tuesday evening.
The key to the Golden Falcons' success was stellar play by the front line trio of Meredith Burroughs, Madison Mercer and Connor Davis.
"When those three play like they did tonight, we are tough to beat," C.B. Aycock head coach Davis Harris said. "I thought that their combined effort was as good as it's been at any point this season."
The Golden Falcons jumped out to a 15-3 lead in the opening set and never looked back as the Saints tried to adjust to the tempo. The second set was much the same as the C.B. Aycock offense found open areas against the Southern Wayne defense and took advantage.
"At times we go on runs where we play really well," Southern Wayne head coach Eric Durol said. "When we play fast and get it going quickly we are at our best. C.B. Aycock was able to slow the game down, and set up their offense and we didn't react well."
The Golden Falcons got six kills from Burroughs in the decisive third set and cruised to the finish.
Burroughs finished with nine kills and two blocks. Davis added nine kills and one block while Mercer tallied eight kills and six blocks.
"We needed to play like this to get ready for the second half of the conference season," Harris said. "We play Triton next and they are a very good team, so hopefully tonight will prepare us to play our best against them."
Ana Rodriquez recorded two kills and six blocks for Southern Wayne. Madison Davis finished with four kills and one block.
C.B. Aycock (8-2 overall, 4-1 ECC) travels to Triton on Thursday. Southern Wayne (2-7, 1-5) will be the guest of Spring Creek tonight at 6 o'clock.
