Four Wayne County teams earn state bids

Wayne County 13, Wilson 1

* ROCK RIDGE -- Hunter Burke and Lee Daniels both supplied four hits as Wayne County captured the Eastern N.C. Babe Ruth 12-Under District 4 baseball championship.

Wayne County advanced to the state tournament July 15-19 in Laurinburg.

Sawyer Smith, Cameron Matthews and Boone Moody each contributed two hits. Tanner Bradley belted a home run and Drew Barnes and Cameron Kornegay both had a hit.

Wayne County erupted four seven runs in the first inning and finished with 18 hits.

Chandler Matthews collected the win on the mound.

beats Greene County

* ROCK RIDGE -- The Wayne County South squad earned a state-tournament berth with a decisive victory over Greene County in the Eastern N.C. Babe Ruth 8-U District 4 baseball tournament Thursday evening.

The state tournament begins July 7 in Winterville.

Gabe Vernon and Daniel Garcia cranked out three triples apiece in the win.

The team is directed by head coach Shane Phillips, and assistant coaches Lee Collins and Jeff Vernon.

Wayne County claims title

* ROCK RIDGE -- Wayne County completed its sweep of Greene County in the Eastern N.C. Babe Ruth 9-U District 4 baseball tournament Thursday evening.

Wayne County emerged victorious in the best-of-three series 16-0 on Tuesday and 16-3. The team clinched a berth in the state tournament, which launches July 7 in Sanford.

Tanner McKeel, Andrew Fricks and Cole Matthews handed the pitching duties in Thursday's mercy-rule win. Landon Ginn and Connor Wise shared the mound responsibility in Tuesday's triumph.

8-U softball

Wayne Co. 18-17, Kinston 7-7

The Wayne County 8-Under softball team secured a state-tournament berth with a doubleheader sweep of Kinston in the District 8 championship series Thursday evening.

Wayne County advances to the state tournament, which begins July 6 in New Bern.

The team is coached by Tink Jones, Paul Marak and TJ Smothers.
