Wayne South doubles up C.B. Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock spent five innings trying to figure out Wayne South starting pitcher Jamar Holmes.

An assist from a passing thunderstorm helped the home team out, but it was not enough to derail Wayne South from a 4-2 victory in Junior American Legion baseball action Thursday night.

Holmes cruised through five innings as South built a 4-0 lead, but could not recapture the magic after the teams endured a 40-minute rain delay.

"I wanted him to come out and finish the game so bad," said Wayne South head coach T.J. Hinson. "I went out to the mound the first time and he said 'don't take me out', so I gave him one more batter, but I could tell he wasn't the same."

Wayne South opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning when Ashton Cox singled and Jacob Sasser belted a two-run home run.

The visitors made the game 4-0 in the top of the sixth when Clayton Cashwell drew a walk, Kevin Williams singled and Sam Ferrell was hit by a pitch. Back-to-back, bases-loaded walks to Colton Chrisman and Taylor Raynor forced in two runs.

"I thought Ryan Grant did a great job on the mound for five innings," said C.B. Aycock head coach Nelson Cunningham. "But because he isn't used to being a starter, we had to take him out a little early and then we ran into some trouble throwing strikes."

Aycock attempted a sixth-inning rally.

Bobby Hampton and Justin Barbour each singled. Greg Johnson provided a two-RBI base knock. Holmes then exited the contest and Jackson Hayes entered to quell the rally. Hayes pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief to earn the save.

"I told my guys last night, if you can locate three pitches you can be successful," said Hinson. "I thought both Jamar and Jackson did a good job of throwing strikes with multiple pitches."

Wayne South (8-3 overall) travels to Rocky Mount for a makeup game tonight. C.B. Aycock (10-5) visits West Craven on Sunday.
