Trojan squads record best Joby Hawn Cup finish in program history

MOUNT OLIVE -- Since joining the Division II ranks in the mid-1990s, the Mount Olive College athletics program enjoyed its finest season in Conference Carolinas competition during 2010-11.

The Trojans ended up among the top three schools in the Joby Hawn Cup chase in all three categories -- overall, men's and women's. MOC compiled a .754 rating behind overall team Cup winner Queens. The women's team was second to Queens, while the men's teams placed third behind Queens and Limestone, respectively.

It is the first year of competition for separate Women's and Men's Hawn Cups. The Cup has been awarded annually since 1975, and is given in honor of former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his many years of service to the league now known as Conference Carolinas.

Points are awarded in each sport in which a school participates, and is based on the team's regular-season conference finish. Bonus points are awarded for winning or finishing second in that sport's league tournament. The maximum number of points possible varies from school to school based on how many conference sports they field, so a percentage of possible points earned is used to determine the Hawn Cup standings.

The Trojans might have finished first overall if men's volleyball been included in the totals. Because men's volleyball was an emerging sport and has just five participating schools (one shy of full conference sport recognition), no points were awarded for that sport.

MOC repeated as the regular-season and tournament champion.

Along with men's volleyball, the Trojans claimed three other conference championships -- men's and women's track and field, and baseball -- during the spring. The women's basketball, and men's and women's cross country teams emerged conference runners-up.

Overall, 13 of the 16 teams fielded by MOC placed among the top five in conference play in their respective sports.
