Boys' tennis
C.B. Aycock 5, D.H. Conley 4
* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock won four out of six singles matches and claimed a pivotal doubles point in a 5-4 victory over D.H. Conley on Tuesday in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs.
Will Hoff, Michael Kearney, Austin Walker and Rex Rose each supplied a singles win for the Golden Falcons. Conley prevailed in the first two doubles matches before the team of Kearney-Rose earned the deciding point for Aycock at No. 3 doubles.
"Michael and Rex came through for us in a big way at No. 3 doubles," said Golden Falcons' head coach Luke Vail. "We have got to step up our doubles play in the next round. Today was a big win for us against a really good team."
The Golden Falcons (18-2 overall) entertain Wilson Fike next Tuesday.
Eastern Wayne 5, South Brunswick 4
* SOUTHPORT -- Eastern Wayne picked up key singles points and hung on for a 5-4 win at South Brunswick in the first round of the NCHSAA 3-A dual-team playoffs Tuesday.
Chaz Fitzpatrick, Steven Taylor, Rafael Guerra and Mitchell Kaspar all recorded a singles victory for the Warriors. The doubles team of Fitzpatrick-Mike Barnette also prevailed at No. 1 doubles.
South Brunswick won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, but it wasn't enough.
"In singles, Rafael Guerra and Mitchell Kaspar pulled out big three-set matches," said Eastern Wayne head coach Craig Hassell. "Guerra's win was especially big because it gave us four wins in singles and I felt good we could win one in doubles. We are a young and inexperienced team that needed a big playoff win like this."
The Warriors (12-3 overall) travel to West Carteret nex Tuesday.
Baseball
Spring Creek d. Goldsboro
* Zack Harrell threw a five-inning no-hitter as Spring Creek knocked off Carolina 1-A Conference opponent Goldsboro on Tuesday.
Harrell led the Gators offensively with five hits and five runs scored.
Corey Howell provided four hits. Chris Nichols supplied three hits, including a three-run home runs. Ricky Brayboy added three hits. Duane Gurganus and Matt Rogers both had two hits.
Spring Creek pounded out 20 hits as a team.
The Gators (12-10, 7-2 CC) entertain North Duplin on Friday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Southern Wayne 19, Cleveland 1, 5 innings
* DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne made short work of Cleveland in a 19-1, five-inning victory in the first round of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament Tuesday evening.
The second-seeded Saints (16-6 overall) entertain Eastern Wayne on Thursday night. The Warriors swept the two regular-season meetings.
Taylor Brock finished with three hits, including a home run and four RBI. Cody Davis added two hits and three RBI. Kevin Wise had two hits and an RBI. Zach Grantham provided a double and also walked three times.
Tyler Gainey, Ashton Cox, Colton Chrisman, Taylor Raynor, Keith Jones and Jacob Sasser each supplied a hit. Cleveland recorded just one hit.
Southern Wayne defeated Spring Creek on Monday in a makeup game in Seven Springs. Wise belted a grand slam and tallied six RBI. He finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Tyler Gainey contributed three hits, including two home runs and had three RBI.
Jamie Dove finished with two hits, including a home run and two RBI. Cox also had two hits.
Jamaar Holmes earned his first varsity win on the mound.
North Lenoir 14, South Johnston 3, 5 innings
* LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir pounded South Johnston 14-3 in five innings in the first round of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament on Tuesday night.
The Hawks (15-7 overall) visit top-seeded Charles B. Aycock in Thursday night's semifinals. North Lenoir split its two regular-season meetings with the Golden Falcons.
David Wiggins led the Hawks with three hits and RBI. Chastin Radford supplied two hits and two RBI. Caleb Kearney belted a two-run home run. Grayson Phillips and Spencer both had a hit and two RBI.
Kearney allowed three earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks and pitched all five innings to collect the win.
North Duplin 4, Rosewood 1
* CALYPSO -- North Duplin defeated Carolina 1-A Conference foe Rosewood 4-1 on Tuesday night.
Larry White tallied three hits for the Rebels. Ryan Wolf (RBI) and Joseph King each supplied two hits. Colby Gehron and Mitchell Thigpen both added hit.
White earned the win on the mound and Wolfe pitched four innings of relief to record the save.
Jonathan Franks, Garrett Burns and Will Winslow all contributed a hit for the Eagles. Burns suffered the loss on the mound.
North Duplin (16-3, 7-2 CC) visits Spring Creek on Friday while the Rosewood entertains Princeton.
Greene Central 10, North Pitt 0, 5 innings
* WINTERVILLE -- Greene Central rolled past Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe North Pitt 10-0 in five innings on Tuesday night at Pitt Community College.
Will Crandle contributed two hits for the Rams. Ryan Cobb, Colby Chase and Deric Grant all had a hit and two RBI. Wes Sowers pitched all five innings and earned the win on the mound.
Greene Central (14-4 overall, 10-1 EPC) entertains SouthWest Edgecombe today at Pitt Community College.
Wayne Christian 5, Crossroads Christian 3
* Chandler Harrell pitched a complete game to lead Wayne Christian to a 5-3 win over Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foe Crossroads Christian on Tuesday.
Chase Darden paced the Eagles' offense with a triple and two RBI. Jordan Crouthamel, Austin Howell and Harrell each contributed a double.
Wayne Christian (7-8 overall, 6-4 CCC) plays host to Northwood Temple on Thursday in the first round of the CCC tournament.
Greenfield 16, Wayne Country Day 13
* Wayne Country Day rallied twice to tie visiting Greenfield, but could not complete its final comeback attempt in a 16-13 loss in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.
The Chargers tied the game at 3-3 with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Three runs in the home half of the fourth inning created a 9-9 tie.
Hil Tanner led Wayne Country Day with four hits and four RBI. Cody Neal added two hits and three RBI.
The Chargers (12-8 overall, 4-3 CPIC) visit Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Friday.
Girls' soccer
Goldsboro 2, Rosewood 0
* Ana Harris and Holly Pittard both scored goals as Goldsboro won 2-0 at Carolina 1-A Conference foe Rosewood on Tuesday night.
Pittard and Dorian Wences each supplied assists for the Cougars. Sarah Moore recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
Goldsboro (7-7-1, 3-2-0 CC) visits Spring Creek on Thursday, while Rosewood travels to Princeton.
Golf
Walnut Creek Ladies
* KINSTON -- Kathy Woodard claimed second gross in first flight play during the two-day East Carolina Ladies Golf Association finals contested at Kinston Country Club.
Faye Franklin and Charlotte Campbell took second gross and low putts, respectively, in third flight. Evelyn Rose seized first gross in fourth flight.
Joyce Reynolds captured first gross in fifth flight. Betty Holloway and Pete Reaves earned second net and low putts, respectively, in the same flight.
Lane Tree Ladies
* KINSTON -- Cathy Garris secured first low gross and Linda Watson grabbed second low-net honors during first flight play in the ECLGA two-day finals played at Kinston Country Club.
Mary Ann Sutton won first low gross in second flight and was recognized for perfect attendance. Sherry Minner took first low net in third flight, while Lou Ellen Flowers had second low net in fourth flight.
Youth basketball
WC Blazers 12U claims championship
* DUNN -- Isaiah Hatchett collected a double-double -- 12 points, 11 rebounds -- and the Wayne County Blazers 12-Under boys' basketball team dumped Wilmington, 53-40, to win the USBA Walter Blue Memorial Tournament crown.
Jacob Norris added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Blazers, who fashioned a 4-0 worksheet during tournament play. P.J. Hill contributed six points and rode the Waves for five steals.
"An all-around team effort," said Blazers head coach Danny Norris.
Wayne County (8-3 overall) launched pool play with a 54-35 triumph over the Waves. D.J. Waters pumped in 15 points and grabbed four steals. Hatchett tallied eight points and turned in a monsterous 20-rebound performance. Aaron Smith registered four points and 12 boards.
The Blazers wrapped up pool play with a 40-26 conquest of the Dunn Wildcats. Waters had 11 points and five steals, while Y'Oente Royal chipped in eight points. Smith and Justin Lofton-Russell collected 10 and eight rebounds, respectively.
In semifinal-round action, Wayne County blitzed the Triangle Blazers, 59-37. Martaye Sembly had 14 points and five rebounds. Hatchett added 11 points, 12 boards and four steals. Jacob Norris supplied eight points and 13 rebounds. Lofton-Russell wiped the glass for 14 rebounds.
Wayne County clinched a berth in the USBA state tournament, which begins May 20.
JV sports
* Baseball: C.B. Aycock 9, Eastern Wayne 6 -- Tyler Huetter paced the Warriors' offense with three hits, while MJ Morgan swatted a home run. Brandon Johnson, Ryan Kelly and Justin Lee also contributed offensively. The Warriors play Greene Central on Friday.
Middle schools
* Softball: Norwayne 19, Greenwood 4 -- Norwayne's Carlee Millard was 2 for 2 at the plate with a home run. Other leading hitters were Abbie Walton, Keeley Fulghum, Madison Walton and Hailey Broggi. Millard also picked up the win in the pitcher's circle. Norwayne completed the season with a 9-3 record.
* Girls' soccer: Eastern Wayne 9, Spring Creek 0 -- McKalynn Baker, and Allison Bailey and Ashlie Lee each scored three goals and had an assist for the Warriors. Morgan Cotton also recorded an assist. Eastern Wayne finished the season with a 9-1 record and earned a share of the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Championship.
