Southern Wayne spoils C.B. Aycock's senior night

PIKEVILLE -- Southern Wayne shouldn't expect to be invited to senior night in Pikeville again any time soon.

The Saints scored five runs in the second inning and earned a 10-5 win at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season champion Charles B. Aycock on Thursday night. It was Saints' second consecutive senior night win in Pikeville and the victory clinched second place in the ECC.

Keith Jones' infield single in the top of the second inning scored Ashton Cox to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Cody Davis' RBI infield single and Kevin Wise's two-run double stretched the lead to 4-0. Davis later scored on Zach Grantham's groundout.

"We really squared some balls up in that second inning," said Southern Wayne head coach Trae McKee. "I thought we ran the bases really well today. We took advantage of some opportunities with some timely hitting. This win was huge because now we don't have to worry about anybody else to have to determine what happens to us."

Davis scored on an error in the top of the fourth inning to increase the Saints' lead to 6-0.

Saints' starting pitcher freshman Jackson Hayes held the Golden Falcons to one hit through the first four innings. Aycock managed just three base runners during that stretch. Hayes surrendered four runs (two earned) on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 41/3 innings.

Mick Walker scored on an error in the home half of the fifth to pull the Golden Falcons to within 6-1. Two batters later, Adam Pate lined a pinch-hit RBI single to left field. Tyler Farmer added a sacrifice bunt and Pate later scored on a wild pitch to trim the margin to 6-4.

Aycock tallied just three hits and permitted seven unearned runs.

"We just did not play well tonight in all aspects of the game," said Golden Falcons' head coach Charles Davis. "I don't know what it was. We honestly did not look like the team we have looked like all year. Southern Wayne took it to us in every phase of the game."

Southern Wayne picked up a run on an Aycock error in the top of the sixth inning. Wise's RBI single to center pushed the lead to 8-4. Wise later scored on an error and finished the game with four and three RBI. Davis contributed two hits and an RBI. Cox had three hits and Jones supplied two hits and an RBI.

"Kevin and Cody are tough when they're locked in," said McKee. "They're two really solid hitters and they kind of set the tone for us."

The Saints (13-5 overall, 9-3 ECC) tacked on an additional run in the seventh inning and Aycock scored on a Saints' error in the bottom of the inning.

Southern Wayne and Aycock are both participating in the Pitt County Spring Invitational on Saturday at Guy Smith Stadium in Greenville. The Saints face D.H. Conley at 2:30 p.m. Aycock (15-4, 10-2) plays New Bern at 5 p.m.
