Henderson, Carswell, Long, McCain claim Southeast Region titles at meet

HICKORY -- Mount Olive College finished fourth out of 13 teams in the women's meet and sixth out of 11 teams in the men's meet during the Lenoir-Rhyne University Southeast Region Championships contested this weekend.
Four Trojans captured individual first-place finishes -- Caleb Henderson (men's high jump), Alaytra Carswell (women's 200), Chelsea Long (women's 5,000) and Chelyn McCain (women's 400 hurdles).
Henderson recorded a height of 1.85 meters in the high jump, one week after taking the event in the season-ending Conference Carolinas Championship meet at Lees-McRae.
The Trojans also had a pair of top-five finishes in both the men's hammer throw and the men's javelin. Joe Murphy, who claimed Conference Carolinas men's field athlete-of-the-year honors at the conference championship, finished third in the hammer throw (39.45 meters) and fourth in the javelin (41.77 meters).
Teammate Cort McCombs placed fourth out of 19 throwers in the javelin (42.44 meters), while Alex Swinson (35.18 meters) finished fifth out of 18 throwers in the hammer throw. McCombs also finished third out of 11 runners in the 400-meter hurdles (58.38 seconds), just behind teammate David Wilson, who placed second (57.87 seconds).
On the women's side, Carswell finished first out of 26 runners with a time of 25.40 seconds in the 200-meter dash. She also placed second out of 23 competitors in the 100 meter dash (12.45). Carswell was named Conference Carolinas women's track athlete-of-the-year and freshman-of-the-year.
Long placed first out of 35 runners in the 5000 meters. Her time of 18:13 was 47 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor.
McCain finished first out of nine competitors with a time of 1:07 in the 400 meter hurdles. She also finished second out of 14 competitors in the 100 meter hurdles (16.12 seconds).
Wislande Maxy recorded a pair of top 10 finishes, placing third out of 19 runners in the 400 meter dash (59.71 seconds) and ninth out of 26 runners in the 200 meter dash (27.04 seconds). Maxy was one of only three runners to record a time under one minute in the 400 meter dash.
King, which will join Conference Carolinas in 2011-12, finished first in the women's team standings. UNC Pembroke placed first in the men's team standings. The meet was not an official NCAA regional, but did feature a number of the top teams in the region.
