Wayne Country Day muscles past Epiphany

Wayne Country Day took advantage of a Spring wind blowing out and played longball in an 11-5 win over Epiphany School on Friday afternoon.

The Chargers belted three home runs and six extra-base hits in the win.

"I thought we came out a little bit flat, but I will take winning a game like this any day of the week," Wayne Country Day head coach Michael Taylor said. "We were able to come through with a couple of big hits and put up a couple big innings."

Epiphany jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Tyler Held hammered a two-run home run over the center field fence.

Wayne Country Day answered in the bottom of the second with a pair of blasts.

Cody Neal plated a pair of runs with a bases-clearing triple and was followed by a home run off the bat of Hil Tanner. Two pitches later Cole Davis ripped a home run of his own to cap the five-run rally.

The Chargers added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Trent Proimos deliverd a two-run single that plated Davis and Pearson.

The 7-3 advantage would be more than enough for Davis who settled in on the pitchers mound and earned the win. Davis tossed six innings and struck out four batters. Pearson pitched the seventh inning in relief.

"I thought after the first inning Cole really settled down and pitched pretty well," Taylor said. "He threw strikes and kept them from getting many hits with runners in scoring position."

The Chargers finished the game with three runs in the home half of the sixth that put the game away.

Proimos was hit by a pitch, Thomas Kireski singled and Wyatt Bland brought in a run with a productive groundout. Cody Neal blasted a two-run home run two batters later.

Chase Ballinger suffered the hard-luck loss for the Falcons despite throwing a total of 138 pitches over five innings.

Wayne Country Day (8-7) plays host to Oakwood on Monday.
