WCDS chops down Oakwood

Wayne Country Day didn't just control the second half against Oakwood on Monday, it dominated.
The Chargers scored three goals in the final 40 minutes in a 4-1, Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference victory. It was Wayne Country Day's sixth consecutive win.
Kierston Sutherland's goal gave early in the first half gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Catherine Ford scored in the 22nd minute to tie the game at 1-1. The Chargers had multiple opportunities to take the lead late in the first half. Sarah Best's header off Ford's corner kick in the 30th minute sailed high.
Best's corner kick in the 38th minute hit the post. Wayne Country Day also failed to convert a corner kick in the 39th minute.
Ford's shot from long distance in the 47th minute was deflected by Oakwood keeper Catlin Kram, but there were no Chargers in the area to collect the rebound. Kram saved Catherine Langston's shot in the 54th minute and Wayne Country Day couldn't convert a corner kick in the 57th minute.
Sutherland just missed giving the Eagles the lead in the 54th minute as her shot rolled past the front of the goal and out of bounds.
Ford put the Chargers in front for good off an assist from Best in the 62nd minute. Kram turned away Langston's shot in the 67th minute and Best's attempt to score a minute later sailed high.
Best stretched the lead to 3-1 on Margaret Tanner's assist in the 68th minute. Ford tucked a long shot into the upper right corner of the goal in the 71st minute.
"We've been working on the offense all season," said Chargers' head coach William Hogan. "These young players are really stepping up to meet the demands and it's really good for us. This team has been really good about stepping on the field and playing every game as a new game and I'm really happy about that.
"It's been a long time coming."
Led by junior Mack Thompson, Wayne Country Day's defense limited Oakwood's scoring chances throughout the second half. Attackers were marked tightly and passes from the midfield had difficulty reaching their intended target. The Chargers held a 16-1 edge in shots on goal after halftime.
"I have got to give a lot of credit to Mack Thompson," said Hogan. "She's really done a great job this entire season with communication. She's very vocal back there and demanding of that defense. She dictates to people where she wants them to go and they really listen to her well."
Wayne Country Day (8-4-0 overall) visits Greenfield today.
