Urquiola tied for sixth overall in golf tournament

VASS -- The Mount Olive College women's team is in fourth place and the men's team is in a tie for seventh place after opening-round play of the 2011 Conference Carolinas Golf Championships.

The women's squad posted a round of 342 under sunny, but very windy conditions on the Woodlake Resort's Maple Course layout. The Trojans lead fifth-place Limestone by 20 shots, and trail third-place Pfeiffer by nine strokes.

Junior Valentina Urquiola led the Trojans with an 80 that tied her for sixth in a field of 37. Sophomore Emelie Andersson sits one spot outside the top-10 after an opening-round 84. The Trojans also counted rounds of 88 by Tegan Skirpstas, which tied for 19th, and a 90 by Emy Ohling.

Sarah Baniszewski rounded out the scoring for Mount Olive with a 98.

Belmont Abbey holds a 27-shot lead over second-place Queens.

On the men's side, the Trojans carded a team score of 318 to tie St. Andrews for seventh. Those two teams are five shots ahead of ninth-place Lees-McRae, and five shots behind sixth-place Limestone.

Fabrizio Ceppi led Mount Olive with a round of 78 to tie for 18th in a field of 50. The junior from Venezuela is two shots out of the top 10 and seven shots behind first-round co-leaders David Bainbridge of Queens and Diego Polo of Coker, who each fired a 1-under par 71 on the 6,882-yard layout.

Dalton Gore posted a round of 79 to tie for 23rd, while David Shields carded an 80 to tie for 28th. Rounding out the scoring for the Trojans were Scott Woodard, who fired an 81 to tie for 31st, and Mark O'Hara, who turned in an 84.

Queens leads the team competition with a 297.

Second-round play began this morning. The three-day, 54-hole event concludes Tuesday.
