C.B. Aycock turns back Triton, 4-3, in final at-bat

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock got the last big hit in a back-and-forth affair and claimed a 4-3 win over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Triton on Friday night.

The Golden Falcons played from behind nearly the entire game before coming through in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Trailing 3-2, Connor Davis started the game-winning rally by reaching on a Triton error. Cierra Harris failed to get a bunt down on the first two pitches of her at-bat, but followed with a rocket double off the center-field fence. Misty Edwards grounded into a fielder's choice to tie the game at 3-3.

Brooke Bell delivered the game-winning base knock two batters later with a line drive that eluded the Hawks' center fielder by just inches and rolled to the fence.

"We said going into that last inning the bottom of the order was going to have to get it done," C.B. Aycock head coach Brad Matthews said. "Those girls really came through. Cierra got a huge pinch hit and then Brooke with a hard hit ball to win it."

A pair of Golden Falcon errors in the first inning allowed Triton to take a 1-0 lead. Aycock grabbed the advantage back in the bottom of the third with two runs on a trio of hits from Ashley Shingleton, Rachel Jordan and Bell.

Errors cost the Golden Falcons the lead in the top of the fifth as the Hawks tied the game on a triple by Kelsey Lee. Triton grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth when Katelyn Ennis doubled, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Holly Howard.

"We put ourselves in a bad position because I don't think we came out with the right intensity level," Matthews said. "We finally got it going in the final inning, luckily it wasn't too late."

Bell earned the win in the pitcher's circle for the Golden Falcons by tossing a complete game and striking out 12 Hawks.

C.B. Aycock (10-2 overall, 7-0 ECC) will be back in action Tuesday at North Lenoir.
