Boys' basketball

James Kenan 66,

Princeton 58, OT

WARSAW -- James Kenan scored 12 points in overtime and knocked off state-ranked Princeton in the opening round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs on Monday night.

After opening the season 22-1 overall, the Dawgs dropped their final two games of the year.

Joey Smith led the way for the Tigers with a 24-point night. E.J. Smith added 15 points and James Owens tallied nine points inside Harmon Gymnasium.

Ben Jacobs paced the Princeton attack with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Aaron Simpkins added 10 points in the defeat.

James Kenan (17-5) advances to take on Tri-County 1-A Confernce archrival Wallace-Rose Hill on Wednesday night.

South Central 73,

Eastern Wayne 58

WINTERVILLE -- South Central's high-powered offense proved to be too much for Eastern Wayne too handle in the opening round of the NCHSAA 3-A playoffs on Monday night.

The Falcons pulled away in the second half for a 73-58 victory.

Donte Harper led all scorers with 24 points inthe win. Fred Corry finished with 16 points for South Central.

Byron Thompson paced the Eastern Wayne offense with 13 points and nine rebounds. Josiah Davis added 11 points, while Lee Atkinson added 10 points.

The Warriors finished the season 14-10 overall.

Girls' basketball

West Carteret 44, C.B. Aycock 36

PIKEVILLE -- West Carteret got timely baskets down the stretch and held off C.B. Aycock on Monday night in the opening round of the NCHSAA 3-A playoffs.

Courtnei Gilbert led the way for the Golden Falcons with 10 points. Imari Howell added nine points and eight rebounds. Ivy Hartzell finished with 11 rebounds.

C.B. Aycock finished the season 17-7 overall.
