MOUNT OLIVE -- Robbin Kennedy drove in four runs, two coming on a home run in a four-run fifth inning as Mount Olive scored eight unanswered runs for a 13-6 victory over Mercyhurst in game one of a non-conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field. Olivia Poplin had three runs batted, while Kelly Minshew was 4-for-4 with two rbi's. Trojan second baseman Courtney Bell set a school single-game defensive record by assisting on three double plays.
The Trojans settled for a split as three errors in the top of the third led to five unearned runs and helped give Mercyhurst a 7-2 victory. Laker starter Amanda Norman combined with two relievers on a six-hitter.
The doubleheader was the home opener for the Trojans and 2011 season opener for Mercyhurst.
Mount Olive (2-2) used a four-run third inning to take its first lead of game one. Kennedy and Minshew had rbi-singles and Alyssa Bradshaw's two-run double put the Trojans on top 4-1. After Mercyhurst scored a run in the top of the fourth on Andrea Sauers' rbi-single, the Trojans answered in the bottom of the inning when Anna Munizza scored on Minshew's single.
