PRINCETON -- The shots fell from inside and out as Princeton's offense came alive in a 45-23 win over Spring Creek on Monday night in the opening round of the Carolina 1-A Conference girls' basketball tournament.
Playing with just six players for the fourth consecutive game, the Dawgs jumped out to an 11-4 advantage after one quarter. Both teams struggled through the second period and finished with six points combined.
The Dawgs put the game away in the third quarter on the strength of eight points from Savanna Massengill which led to a comfortable 14-point lead.
"I told the girls when we got down to six players that we were not going to use that as an excuse for not being successful," said Princeton head coach Marty Gurganus. "I told them that we just have to play smarter while still playing aggressive."
Massengill led the Dawgs' offense with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Tori Paul sank her first three shots from the field on the way to 14 points.
Jana Price paced the Spring Creek attack with 10 points. Alyssa Borja tallied eight points.
Princeton (9-17 overall) faces second-seeded Ayden-Grifton in the tournament semifinals Wednesday. Tip-off is 6:30 p.m.
Spring Creek finished the season 2-20 overall.
